What is loneliness?

Loneliness is an emotion in which state one can feel void inside and disconnection from anything and anyone.  This emotional feeling leads one to distress and discomfort, creating a gap between social connection and isolation.

Chronic loneliness

If loneliness persists for a long time, it is called chronic loneliness. This means that if someone keeps himself isolated from society for a long time, it will become chronic loneliness.

Loneliness v's solitude

There is a vast difference between loneliness and solitude. Loneliness creates a void, but solitude is a fulfilled state.

Loneliness:

Loneliness isn't deliberate or voluntary; people feel pressure to isolate, creating separation from others. Loneliness not only causes depression but also severely affects our mental as well as physical health.

Solitude:

In solitude, people can deliberately be alone or apart from others but still feels happy. They also enjoy spending time with themselves and have a positive impact on social relationships. Solitude is good for mental health, and it helps people stay focused, recharged, and motivated.

Causes of loneliness

The leading causes of loneliness are:

Loneliness being involuntary. No one wants to be alone. But some reasons leave people alone. People feel alone for a variety of reasons, e.g.

1. Big Loss:

A person feels lonely when something unexpected happens to him or suddenly loses something he loves most. For example, the death of a loved one, cheating, divorce, the end of a beautiful and strong relationship, failure in exams, professions, business, etc.

2. External pressure:

People do not feel lonely just by being alone, and they even think lonely in-crowd. A person feels lonely when under external pressure or when he loses his freedom or controls him. For example: If your boss presses you too much, acts up or insults you, family pressure, if your life continues as it did for someone else and toxic relationships are one of the causes of human loneliness and so on.

3. Personality :

Loneliness depends a lot on personality. Extroverted people depend on the outside world for peace and happiness. So when they are alone for a long time, they feel lonely. Introverts, on the other hand, prefer to be alone, but if it is long-term or isolated from society, it will become desolate.

4. Low self-esteem:

Low self-esteem is responsible for loneliness. When self-esteem is low, it creates fear, which results in social awkwardness. Many questions come to mind when people feel terrified and nervous, such as - Is anyone joking with me? So people with low self-esteem face loneliness to isolate themselves.

5. Social media:

With the help of social media, we can make friends with any person anywhere in a moment. But the relationship is shallow and meaningless. Because one's emotions cannot be understood by chatting, one can be cunning. The lack of physical interaction creates suspicion, so people feel lonely despite having thousands of friends on the friend list. How many people use social media? Currently, 4.48 billion people worldwide use social media, equivalent to 56 percent of the global population. The more social media we are active on, the more lonely we will be.
