Instagram has introduced a new Playback function for its image and video-sharing platform, which gives users a summary of their finest Stories from 2021. Users can see their top ten stories of the year on the Meta-owned service. While Instagram will recommend a set of Stories, users can remove and replace them before posting their 2021 Playback video. The feature is currently available to all users and will remain so for the next few weeks.
Users will now see a banner at the top of their Instagram feeds with a button that allows them to curate stories from their Stories archive. As previously reported by Mashable, these older Stories will be combined into their 2021 Playback. Users can delete Stories that are automatically picked, for example, if they bring up unpleasant memories. Any other Story from 2021 can be substituted, and it will be added to their playing list.
Instead of re-sharing individual stories, Instagram's new Playback function could be useful for small businesses or organizations to look back on the year. Users will also be able to make their own year-in-review videos, which will highlight their favorite Stories from the previous year. The function appears to be inspired by Spotify's Wrapped feature, as well as a number of third-party applications that became extremely popular at the end of the year, allowing users to share a grid of their "top nine" posts on the network.
