WHAT IS INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Since the modern means of mass communication had not been in place till printing was invented in the 15th century in Europe, the vast majority of people lived within the context of their small village or tribal community with interpersonal communication being the main form of social contact. Interpersonal communication usually occurs in social situations, whereas the mass media inform decisions, interpersonal contacts support and legitimate them. Interpersonal influence is two-way communication, the audience can talk back and convince itself. it is flexible, it is more trustworthy. If the goal of Interpersonal communication is to achieve a changed attitude, to this end as a rule interpersonal communication is more effective than mass communication. The great advantage that mass communication has over interpersonal communication is that multiplier factors in circling messages and information. With the rapid proliferation of mass media in India, the mass communication process is reaching out to a large number of people. Interpersonal Communication is an exchange of information between two or more individuals through verbal communication or non-verbal communication. The interpersonal skills are the ability to listen and understand, problem-solving, decision making, and personal stress management. Interpersonal communication is termed dyadic communication. It is a universal form of face-to-face routine communication between two people, both while sending and receiving messages. it may be formal or informal, verbal or non-verbal. It takes place anywhere using words, sounds, facial expressions, gestures, and postures. It is an effective communication situation because you receive immediate feedback. Due to the proximity between the sender and the receiver, interpersonal communication has an emotional appeal too, It can motivate, encourage and coordinate work more effectively than any other form of communication. The efficacy of interpersonal communication depends very much on the relationship between two partners in communication, their status, roles, and skills. It has greater scope for grapevine. Interpersonal communication can be further subdivided into formal or informal communication. formal means meeting and confidence. informal means private discussion with family members or friends. Human communication is a complex process with many components. Interpersonal communication is vital to every society. Life is meaningfully sustained by the pulsating beat of interpersonal communication that takes place all around us including in our homes, schools, offices, college premises, and other public places. It feeds the mind of people, enriches their personalities, and quickens their imagination. But just as it infuses life, it can also generate problems if misused. Personal rivalries, as well as racial, religious, regional, communal, and international conflicts, could be resulted from the improper use of interpersonal communication.

The elements of Interpersonal Communication : 

The communicators - the term communicator refers to both the sender of the information as well as the receiver. 

The Message - the message can be conveyed in many ways: speech, body language, tone of voice, etc.

Noise - The gap between the message that is received and what it sends.

Feedback - The response of the receiver, or the message sent back to the sender.

Channel - how the communication occurs, through which channel or medium.

Context - Interpersonal communication is contextual. Context is about the environmental factors that influence the outcomes of communication.
