Cisco Systems, an American technology company, operating globally, best known for its computer communications products. As the company that sells its products the most to other businesses, Cisco did not become a household name, but in the second decade of the 21st century it became one of the largest companies in the United States. Cisco was founded in 1984 and has its headquarters in San Jose, California.

The founders of Cisco Systems were Leonard Bosack and Sandra Lerner, a married couple (later divorced) who met while studying at Stanford University. After graduating in 1981, they worked in a school, managing computers in two separate departments. Bosack discovered a way to connect their computer networks using technology designed by other Stanford employees in the 1970s. He and Lerner realized that the technology of the route, as it was called, could be modified to a greater extent for use outside the university. In December 1984 the two founded Cisco Systems (formerly “cisco Systems”), taking the company name from the city of San Francisco. Stanford eventually licensed its Cisco affiliate software.
In 1985 Cisco sold its first product, Digital Equipment Corporation computer network card. Its first major success, a router serving multiple network protocols, came the following year. Needing cash to expand, the founders turned to a commercial finance company, Sequoia Capital. Sequoia took full control of the company in late 1987 and installed John Morgridge as president and CEO in 1988. He behaved well but did not meet with the founders. In 1990, shortly after Cisco sold its first shares to the public, Lerner was fired, and Bosack resigned.
Cisco Systems grew rapidly in the early 1990s. The company introduced the 7000 model router upgraded in 1993, and in the same year began to benefit other companies. Its first acquisition, Crescendo Communications, allowed Cisco to move freely in the field of network switching devices. In 1994 the company relocated its headquarters from Menlo Park, California, to San Jose, and the following year John T. Chambers replaced Morgridge as CEO. Chambers has continued to pursue a growth strategy through purchasing. In 1998 Cisco acquired Selsius Systems, an Internet telecommunications company that helped Cisco take a leading position in VoIP technology.
In 2006 Cisco introduced TelePresence, a videoconferencing definition intended to allow people in different locations to communicate as if they were in one place. Cisco network technology has made it a leading provider of Internet of Things products, a concept often referred to as Cisco. Chambers retired in 2015, as the company continues to shift its focus from hardware to software.
Cisco seems to be at the forefront of the ‘Cisco’ technology market.
