Educational games have not gotten their day in the sun since the late 90s. There was a time when games like the Putt-Putt or Pajama Sam games were just as prominent as Doom.
There was even a point in time when gaming mascots like Mario and Rayman had their own educational video games, ones that mixed each game’s unique platforming with quizzes that improved players’ knowledge of English, geography, and mathematics.
Even as an adult, you can still brush up on your English, and Indonesian game Grammarian Ltd is the perfect way to do so. This game was created in collaboration between Indonesian studios Algorocks and Simpleton.
Grammarian Ltd takes place in 2099, where all communication must be made using correct grammar. Anyone who uses incorrect grammar will accumulate bad credits, which could lead to them getting fired, denied public service, or even jailed.
Players assume the role of a fresh graduate of theoretical mathematics who, due to some sort of mix-up, is now working as a grammar validator in the biggest grammar validation agency. This means sorting through all sorts of communiqués and sniffing out anything that is out of place.
Throughout the game, players will have to use their grammar and management skills to work their way up the company, going from the “Junior Passable Intern” to “Editor Extraordinaire”. Players must do all this while hiding the fact that they are not fit for the job.
There are over 1,000 documents throughout the game for the player to validate, with over 80 Grammar Briefs for the player to learn. There are also grammar duels to be had, which is a requirement in order for the player to be promoted.
And for the serious grammar hounds out there, there is also an online scoreboard to compare their performance with others around the world. The game also features an amazing, cartoon art style and a humorous story campaign.
Beyond checking for spelling errors and poor syntax, players can also upgrade their crummy apartment, buy candy as a treat and, if they save up, ride a helicopter to work. It is all part of the fun in Grammarian Ltd.
The developers have described Grammarian Ltd as an indie game version of Papers, please. Instead of validating entry passports, however, players must validate documents for their grammatical correctness in a way similar to Google Docs and Grammarly.
Grammarian Ltd is available now on Steam, with a special launch discount that ends on April 27, 2022. The game is also available on Android and iOS.
