After your bath, you are in front of your wardrobe, well you have options for cotton, wool, nylon, rayon, polyester. These are consequences of some scientists who mastered making nylon, rayon, and polyester and extracting cotton and wool fibers. If not the methods, we would be poaching animals for their skin. Then once you are dressed, you groom yourselves with deodorants, scents, oils, foundation creams, makeup, whatnot. These are a necessity now, but 20,000 years back, this was not even a luxury.
Then you head to the dining table for breakfast. Well, the food is cooked, microwave or Tawa cooked or pressure fried. Now culinary skills we all know are a perfect mastering of chemistry and physics.
Then you go to the office, be it the bus or your personal vehicle; it is the internal combustion engine that drives you all the way. You have bridges that carry you across a river. You have subways under mountains. Aircraft move you to a different country. You turn on ac if it's hot, heater when it is cold; that's what technology can do for you. You have coffee, tea, water, dispenser.
Your seat in the office can rotate, it can stretch back, height can be changed again that's is due to engineering.
You come back home; you sleep in a soft mattress laid on a wooden structure. All these are engineering at best.
We use science for luxury.
The above-mentioned incomplete lists give you a gist of what all humans experience irrespective of whether they go to school or not, born in a rich or developing country. So a list of items which I am not going to talk about follows next...
How is science important in daily life?
Well, every single thing you do every day is a result of science. Let us start with everything you do daily.
You wake up in the morning to attend nature's call.
Thanks to extensive civil engineering, you can flush without worrying about where it is going to land.
Again thanks to plumbing, you don't need to go to rivers or ponds, but water lands in your home for your needs.
After your bath, you are in front of your wardrobe, well you have options for cotton, wool, nylon, rayon, polyester. The above-mentioned incomplete lists give you a gist of what all humans experience irrespective of whether they go to school or not, born in a rich or developing country. So a list of items which I am not going to talk about follows next...
I am not talking about cranes and JCB used in construction sites, hydraulic pumps, or big machinery used in industries.
I am not mentioning the instruments in a satellite or CERN on the border of France and Switzerland; I am not going to talk about the Hubble space telescope. I am not going to talk about google maps. Definitely not going to mention apps like swiggy or uber. Not going to talk about hospitals and vaccinations. I am definitely not going to talk about how a camera was once a luxury, and now everyone is making a movie. I am going to omit to mention cell phones and internet services in hand. I am not going to say the green revolution, pesticides, manures, how they affected life. I am not talking about pasteurization and food processing. I am not going to talk about Jet propulsion laboratory or ISRO or NASA, or the CDC. I am not going to talk about F16 or Sukhoi fighter planes. This list is practically endless. I am not going to mention social media platforms that give the audience to people like me.
The second list is for lucky people who know about all these things because they are born in a country that is not in war, where there are stable governments and more money to indulge in luxury.
Science is creating wonders almost every day. What was once sheer fantasy is now almost a reality by the recent achievements of men of science. Almost everything that makes eases our daily life are the wonders of modern science. Science has conferred many gifts on modern life. Indeed, they are far too many to be counted.
Computers: Computers are widely used by common people for recording their day-to-day transactions. It is also used in controlling and processing the activities of factories and plants.
Medical Science: Scientists have invented so many wonder drugs. The effects of these drugs are so miraculous. Using these drugs, fatal diseases could be controlled. Many deadly diseases can be cured by the application of medicine at the proper time.
Human heart transplantation is a significant achievement in the field of surgery. In fact, transplantation of human organs is quite possible now to save the lives of men.
Radio: We listen to news and songs through our radio sets.
Television: Television has become a medium of the audio-visual method of learning. It remains one of the most significant contributions of science to society.
Traveling: We use buses, trams, motor cars, trains, and airplanes to travel from one place to another. Science has narrowed the vast distance of the world.
Newspaper: We read newspapers to get the news of the world. We stay in touch with the world.
Comfort during summer days: Electronic fans and air-conditioners give us comfort during summer days.
Mobile Phones: We cannot think of living without our mobile phones. Apart from talking to a distant friend, we can browse the internet on our smartphones.
Camera: When we go out on holiday, we can take photographs with a camera.
Distant images: Television photographs about the movement of astronauts on the moon were seen on earth. By the device of electromagnetic waves, photographs of Venus and Mars, millions of miles away, were transmitted by spacecraft to the earth.
Power and Electricity: Adequate Power (Electricity) is a necessity for every one of us. Most of our everyday works is dependent upon electricity. The thermal, hydro, and gas power plants are important mediums that allow the uninterrupted electricity supply to common people.
Nuclear energy: Nuclear energy is being harnessed by modern science for peaceful purposes to achieve many more wonders in life. Thus, the atom is energy is producing electrical power, and the radioactive isotopes and tracers are doing marvels in agriculture and industry.
