With the world moving in a much more hi-tech direction, the need for engineers is constantly growing. From civil to aerospace and everything in between, the field of engineering is vast and the need for it is ever so profound.
Being an engineer is a highly respected profession because everything in today's modern world of science would not exist without engineers. Even since ancient times, when Rome was still an Empire, without the engineers the army under Julius Caesar would not have been able to cross the Rhine River and defend Gaul from its invaders. Although the bridges were built in less than two weeks, they were able to support the weight of tens of thousands of soldiers crossing it, as well as withstand the currents of the river.
Although an engineer is perceived as a scientist by the public, this is completely incorrect. While scientists examine nature to discover general principles, engineers apply already established principles derived from mathematics and science to develop the most economical way to solve an engineering problem. Engineers use their skills and knowledge to effectively meet societal needs while still being cost-effective.
People want ways to make their lives easier, and their leader's want to meet those expectations, but the problem is that money is involved in making those plans happen. If such plans were implemented with the idea of "as long as it works", then money can be blindly thrown into such a foolish plan that costs a city, state or even a nation billions of dollars. Engineers come into play to save the leader's money so that they can use it wisely for other plans that can improve the standard of living of the people.
When engineers develop a new product, they consider many factors to ensure that the product they are designing is the best that can be made with existing technology, knowledge, and budget. After extensive design and testing, they create the most cost-effective, safest and most reliable product ready for public use.
Engineers don't just design the roads and bridges you drive to work or school, or the skyscrapers that define a metropolis. They also design practical objects like the paper cup you use to drink your coffee every morning, to the extremely complicated parts of the computer you use to browse the internet and are currently using to read this article.
Engineers are an important part of today's world, and without them everything we take for granted today would never exist. From brake lights that regulate traffic on your commute, to a chair you sit comfortably in, to a bed you lie on to sleep soundly through the night, an engineer was involved in taking it from an idea to a tangible object, to be used. Thanks to engineering, we can have this luxury that makes our lives easier.
