There is a league competition for Test cricket run by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which started on 1 August 2019. It is intended to be the premier championship for Test cricket. This aligns with the ICC's goal of having a summit tournament for each of the three formats of international cricket.
The original plan was to hold the competition in 2013, but space was abandoned for the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. It was rescheduled for June 2017, and the second Test Championship was to be held in India in February 2021. The top four ranked teams on 31 December 2016 - the last date set by the ICC - were due to play a three-match Test Championship. It consisted of two semi-finals and a final. However, in January 2014, the ICC World Test Championship was canceled, and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy was reinstated.
In October 2017, the ICC announced that a Test league had been agreed upon by its members, consisting of the top nine teams playing a two-Test series, with the top two teams qualifying for the World Test League Championship final. The first ICC World Test Championship was followed by the 2019 Cricket World Cup, starting with the Ashes series from 1 August 2019.
The final of the ICC World Test Championship, which lasted for almost two years, will be held on 18 June 2021, and after that, the second ICC World Test Championship will run from July 2021 to June 2023.
The ICC has fixed 120 points for each series in the World Test Championship, divided based on the number of matches. In this 2-year long round, there will be a final match between the top-2 teams of the points table. The winning team will be given all the points of the match. 2 years have been completed and now who has reached the final is given in the points table below -:

Now the World Test Championship has been completed for 2 years, and on June 18, two teams have reached the finals, both of them are "India and New Zealand." The final will be played between them. Whoever wins will be called the World Test Championship.

The championship was first proposed in 2009 when the ICC met with the MCC to discuss the proposed Test Match Championship. Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe was the main brain behind this proposal.
In July 2010, ICC chief executive Aaron Lorgat suggested reaching a semi-final and one final with the four best-ranked nations in the four final rankings to promote flagging interest in the game's longest form. The first tournament was to replace the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales.
The Test Championship was conceptualized by the ICC Chief Executives' Committee at a meeting at their headquarters in Dubai in mid-September 2010. ICC spokesman Colin Gibson said more would come after the meeting. If the championship were to be held in England, the venue for the preferred final would be Lord's. As expected, the ICC approved the plan and stated that the first tournament would be held in England and Wales in 2013. The format of the tournament was also announced. This will include an inaugural league stage, covering all ten current Test cricket countries (Australia, India, England, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh). After the league stage, the top four teams will compete in the playoffs, in which the Test cricket winner will be determined.
There was debate about whether the play-off would be between the bottom two teams or the top four teams, but the latter was unanimously chosen by the board. It was also announced that the tournament would replace the ICC Champions Trophy. No decision was made on how to decide the outcome of the drawn match in the knock-out stages.
The top 9 teams from 12 Test cricket-playing nations will compete in the first tournament.
