When there is rain and water logging, we see videos and photos of people driving cars and other vehicles adventurously through it. Such people are incurring huge financial loss on themselves. Till date, no engine in the world has been designed in such a way the vehicle can run even if water enters the engine.
When water enters the engine and the engine seizes, it is called HYDROSTATIC LOCK. Whether it is a petrol engine or a diesel engine, the hydrostat will lock if water gets in, but diesel vehicles are 80% more likely to get hydrostat than petrol engines. Because most diesel engine cars are intercooler turbocharged engine. Therefore, when the turbo starts working, it pulls the air with its power, if there is water, it also reaches the compression chamber of the engine directly in the air group and the compression ratio increases, due to which the piston connecting rods and the valves are bent, and the engine will cease.
If there is such an urgent situation that you have to drive through a flooded area, keep some things in mind.
In case of petrol vehicles, if there is more than half of the water in the radiator grill, try to avoid it if you have to drive the vehicle through it. If it is not possible, put the vehicle in 1st gear and move forward slowly without pressing the accelerator. If the vehicle has an automatic gear system, put the gear in position D (Drive mode) and then move forward without pressing the accelerator. We usually press the accelerator and drive the vehicle through the water the throttle body will open completely, the water will quickly draw the air intake pipe and the air (the water will reach the filter and from there it will reach the injector and the engine and the vehicle will turn off)
If there is water in such a way that the headlight of the vehicle is submerged, do not go to it because the air intake pipe of petrol vehicles is at the level of the headlight in most vehicles. If the engine is started, the intake pipe will draw water inside.
If it is a diesel vehicle, you can drive with a quarter of the tire covered in water, but if there is water above the bumper, do not be afraid because in vehicles with intercooler turbo, the intake pipes are located at the bottom of the bumper to draw more air, and in that condition, the water will reach the engine faster.
It is wise not try to restart the engine if the water gets in and the engine stopped. It will lead to an engine replacement.
Don't assume that all hydrostat vehicles are covered by insurance, as full engine coverage is available only if the insurance has an add-on package called engine coverage. If it is a normal policy, the insurance company will cover only engine flushing.
Full coverage is available if the parked vehicle is damaged by water, even if there is water in the engine, it is not covered because the companies say that the water will not enter without starting the engine.
The cost of a hydrostat engine can range from 75,000 to 15 lakhs.
