What is Hydroelectricity ?
Hydroelectricity is nothing but the electricity produced from hydropower. Hydroelectricity is the electricity that is produced with the help of water. Actually, the pressure and force of water are effective in producing electricity.

The most common type of hydroelectric power plant is an impoundment facility. An impoundment facility, typically a large hydropower system, uses a dam to store river water in a reservoir. In fact, the dams are built on the river in which the water of the river is stored in a reservoir.
Components of Hydroelectric power plant
There are six primary and main components required to construct a hydroelectric power plant. The components are the dam, pressure tunnel, surge trunk, valve house, penstock, and powerhouse. These are essential components to produce electricity.
1) Dams
Dams are specially created in such a way that it stores the maximum amount of water in the reservoir. Dams are made of strong pressure-resistant concrete walls that are inclined at a certain angle. The walls also control the flow of water. Once the doors are opened, the water comes with large pressure results in producing electricity.
2) Turbines
Turbines are an essential part of the power plant because it is used for producing mechanical energy by water. Turbines are made like a fan but, the size is very large. Just like our table fan , turbines also have edges.
3) Generator
The generator is fixed near the dam or power plant to produce the electricity. The generator is used to convert mechanical energy (produced from turbines) to electrical energy.
How does it work?
Now we will see how the hydroelectric power plant works. First, the water is supplied through a pressure tunnel with force. On the way to the tunnel the surge tank is used to create more pressure, and it can also store the water of a certain amount. The water flows through valve house then it collides on turbines with a large force, and as the effect of it turbines rotate with a certain velocity, and it produces rotational energy which is nothing but mechanical energy. So the mechanical energy is converted into electric energy, and it is supplied at a certain location with the help of a transformer.
Advantages of Hydroelectric power plant
1) The main advantage of this power plant is that it is very clean and neat compared to other power plants.
2) This power plant does not produce any pollution, and it does not harm the environment.
3) The electricity production from the power plant can be used anywhere.
4) It produces a large amount of electricity.
5) The water stored in the reservoir can be used for drinking, farming, and other activities.
6) The used water can also be restored.
Disadvantages
1) The cost of building a Hydroelectric power plant is very high means it is very costly.
2) It requires a large area.
3) It requires area. As a result people living in that area have to relocate to another area.
