The 2005 hurricane season was the most active in recorded history. There were 28 or 29 storms and 15 hurricanes, resulting in roughly $160 billion in damage and almost 3,000 fatalities. The Gulf Coast of the United States (including Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Florida) as well as the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan were hit the worst.

Hurricane Katrina, of course, was the most violent storm of the terrible 2005 season, destroying whole neighbourhoods in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Biloxi, Mississippi.

How are hurricanes formed?

Hurricanes start off as tropical disturbances in warm ocean waters with temperatures of at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit on the surface (26.5 degrees Celsius). Warm waters provide energy to these low-pressure systems.A tropical depression is defined as a storm having wind speeds of less than 38 miles per hour (61 kilometres per hour). When sustained wind speeds exceed 39 miles (63 kilometres) per hour, it becomes a tropical storm and is given a name, according to World Meteorological Organization rules.

Hurricanes are massive heat engines that produce massive amounts of energy. They absorb heat from the warm, moist ocean air and release it as water vapour condensation in thunderstorms.

Hurricanes revolve around the eye, which is a low-pressure area. The calmness of this 20- to 40-mile-wide (32- to 64-kilometer-wide) region is due to sinking air. However, the storm's fiercest winds and rain are contained by a circular "eye wall" that surrounds the eye.

Hurricanes and climate change

Extreme weather, such as hurricanes, may become more often and powerful as a result of climate change. The 2018 hurricane season was one of the busiest on record, with 22 major hurricanes hitting the Northern Hemisphere in less than three months, while the Atlantic storms of 2017 were as deadly. Warmer temperatures in specific regions have an essential influence in determining the power and severity of a storm. Warming in the Arctic might shift future storm paths westward in the Atlantic, making a landfall in the United States more likely.

Hurricane Harvey, which flooded southeastern Texas with a record-breaking 51.8 inches of rain in 2017, was powered by surface waters in the Gulf of Mexico that were 2 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than they had been three decades earlier. As evaporation occurs and warm air contains more vapour than cold air, a warmer atmosphere can also provide more water vapour for rainmaking.
