I want to talk about the basic idea of honesty in this article. The Internet is a great place to do business, but its constant influx of spyware, malware, and spam can be very frustrating for the average user. The unethical practices of companies using pop-ups and spam to sell their products amaze me, but do not surprise me. This should come as no surprise. Because these business practices actually work. Anyone who has worked in this field for a while knows that traffic is king. My experience is an honest reward for honesty in dealing with customers. It may not be easy money, but you can look at yourself in the mirror in the morning and know that you did the right thing. I would rather have a customer for life than a sale. It's not necessarily about making money. It should be about service and product value. Over the last few years, I've been less interested in building computers than in cleaning up computers that have been completely overrun with viruses, Trojan horses, and spam. The most common complaint is "I just want to use my computer without worrying about viruses, trojan horses, and updates!!!". Yes, when he spends an hour cleaning up his computer he does. Take the time to educate your users. You bet I do! After cleaning up or building a computer, he and the client spend an hour or two. Are you losing money with this practice? Yes, but I am well respected by my customers and they keep coming back. One of the big challenges of doing business online is that you can't always be face-to-face with your customers. Nonetheless, there are ways to get around this and add value to your customers and your business down the road. It doesn't cost much to call someone and thank them for their business. It costs nothing to send a thank you note. It's easy to forget that email is not the only means of communication. And given the prevalence of spam, it's not always the best way to communicate. The internet can be a very impersonal place. This is an ethical challenge for all of us trying to sell products and businesses online. Is there an opportunity to give too much when you get little in return? This is an opportunity to always take advantage of when offering advice and tips to your customers. Word will spread over time and you can be assured that your business will develop a core group of customers who appreciate your service and pass it on to others. In the fast-paced world of chain store retail, being a small business is tough. We can't offer big discounts like big chain stores, but we can provide services that match the products. I urge everyone in the IT industry to spend a little more time teaching users the ins and outs of web surfing. Your company and customers will benefit from this. For most people, money makes the world go and businesses carry that money. A businessman will do anything just to generate income, which is the ultimate goal of business.
But we should do everything with integrity.
