Masashi Kishimoto is the author and illustrator of the Japanese comic series Naruto. It narrates the tale of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who aspires to be the village leader and seeks acceptance from his peers. Naruto's pre-teen years are the setting for the first portion of the story (volumes 1–27), while his teens are the setting for the second part (volumes 28–72). The two one-shot manga by Kishimoto that served as the basis for the series are Naruto (1997) and Karakuri (1995), which garnered Kishimoto an honorable mention in Shueisha's monthly Hop Step Award the following year.
From September 1999 to November 2014, Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump serialized Naruto, which had its chapters collected in 72 tankōbon volumes. Pierrot and Aniplex turned Part I of the manga into an anime television series that broadcast on TV Tokyo for 220 episodes between October 2002 and February 2007. The English dub of the series ran on Cartoon Network and YTV from September 2005 and December 2009. A second series called Naruto: Shippuden aired on TV Tokyo for 500 episodes between February 2007 and March 2017, adapting content from Part II of the manga.
Before moving to Adult Swim's Toonami programming block in January 2014 and beginning anew from the first episode, the English dub of Shippuden aired on Disney XD in the United States from October 2009 to November 2011, broadcasting the first 98 episodes. Following the series' cancellation by Disney XD, Viz Media started releasing new English-dubbed episodes on Neon Alley, their streaming service, in December 2012. The episodes ran from episode 99 to episode 338 before the service was shut down in March 2016. In addition to the anime TV shows, Pierrot produced 12 original video animations (OVAs) and 11 animated movies. Light novels, video games, and trading cards created by multiple firms are examples of other Naruto-related items.
Viz Media serialized Naruto in their digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine and obtained licenses for the manga and anime for North American production. 2005 saw the anime series premiere in the US and Canada; in 2006 and 2007, it did the same in the UK and Australia. With the first movie having its theatrical premiere, Viz also published the films and the majority of the OVAs from the series. Boruto Uzumaki, Naruto's son, continues the Naruto saga in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Rather than following his father's ninja path, Boruto wants to forge his own.
