NEET 2021: A medical aspirant, the son of a farm laborer, was discovered dead hours before the NEET exam.
Today, a 19-year-old medical aspirant committed suicide in Tamil Nadu's Salem district just days before the Medical Entrance Exam NEET.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET 2021) for admission to undergraduate medical courses in India will be held today in 202 test cities, after much delay due to the second wave of COVID-19 and amid campaigns for a further postponement.
The medical aspirant, identified as Dhanush, was the son of a farm laborer and was discovered dead hours before the NEET exam. He had failed his previous two NEET attempts.
The boy tried suicide by hanging; after his death, only his mom saw the Dhanush at 3.45 am, and the family notified us," a Mettur range police officer told PTI.
When asked if a suicide note was discovered, he declined to say, but he said he would take the national test for the third time after failing the first two times. But the truth will come when the police started the investigation quickly. Then we will know what really happened, whether he suicide for fear of facing NEET or any other reason.
Soon after his death, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged students not to give up hope and promised that a bill to combat NEET would be introduced the next day.
He stated that the youngster's death emphasizes the importance of reintroducing education to the state's agenda.
"The Union government's indifference and adamant attitude toward NEET continues to be a reason for promising students committing suicide," Mr. Stalin said.
Several politicians and students have protested the NEET exam's approval this year, citing the ongoing pandemic and pleas from many students to reschedule it because the NEET date clashed with other exams, including compartment exams for CBSE students. On the other hand, the center has stated that it has no plans to suspend NEET and other common entrance examinations.
The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the exam, recently received permission from the Supreme Court of India to carry it out as planned. The court denied a petition filed by some students who claimed that NEET interfered with other exams.
Tamil Nadu banned NEET exams for nearly a decade, claiming that they favored wealthy students while failing brilliant poor students. Those living in rural areas cannot afford private coaching. In the last few years, 15 medical students have committed suicide in the state.
NEET was implemented during the UPA regime, which included the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi had previously obtained presidential approval for the state's exemption from NEET. However, even though the state assembly had passed a Bill opposing NEET, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government could not obtain a similar exemption from its BJP ally when it came to power.
The DMK recently formed a commission headed by retired justice AK Rajan to investigate the impact of NEET on medical admissions. Everyone was waiting for the decision of justice and their will NEET exam in Tamil Nadu in 2022.
