GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a satellite navigation system developed by the United States Department of Defense. Research into the system began in the 60s, when the first GPS satellite was introduced in 1978. It took a while for the whole system to get online, but finally on April 27, 1995, it came into full effect. Where you plan to use your GPS receiver may determine whether it is worth the extra cash to get more accuracy. If you are using your GPS unit in a flat area with an open view of the sky, the least expensive unit may work almost once above the line receiver. However, if you plan to use your receiver in a dense tree, while hiking in valleys or narrow valleys, or between tall buildings you will find the best accuracy with a high-quality GPS unit.
