Who made this Gorilla Glass?
Gorilla Glass is actually a product developed and manufactured by Corning. They manufacture it in Harrodsburg in Kentucky, Asan in Korea, and Taiwan. In the year 1960, Corning experimented and tried to chemically strengthen the glass to make it more sturdy and strong so that it can withstand a fair amount of pressure and become resistant to scratches.
Corning makes its alkali-aluminosilicate glass sheet crack resistance by immersing the glass in a hot potassium salt ion exchange bath. And not only in smartphones, but these strengthened glasses are also used as cover glasses for portable electronic devices like portable media players, portable computers displays, and television screens.
Now, what is this Gorilla Glass?
Gorilla glass is a type of strengthened glass that is put to portable devices with glasses in it so that the glasses can be made strong, resisting minor scratches and withstand drops on hard surfaces. It is given in our smartphones so that whenever, by any chance, our device or the smartphone falls or slips from our hand, the glass doesn't shatter into pieces and ruin the device or may also result in our getting hurt.
So basically, it is given for safety and also so that our devices last longer.
What are the different versions of the Gorilla Glass?
1. Corning Gorilla Glass 1
In February 2008, Corning came up with their first-ever bath of Gorilla Glasses in the market, and the device in which it was first used was the iPhone by Apple. The company saw a huge success in this, and the consumers really loved the scratch-resistant in their devices.
By 2010, glass had been used in almost 20% of phones worldwide which was about 200 million units.
2. Corning Gorilla Glass 2
By the start of January 2012, the second generation of the strengthened glass was announced, naming it the Corning Gorilla Glass 2. It was 20% thinner than the first generation of the Gorilla Glasses, and over one billion devices used the Gorilla Glass 2 by the end of October 2012.
3. Corning Gorilla Glass 3
In CES 2013, Corning introduced its third generation of glass, known as Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Corning claimed the third generation of the glass to be three times more scratch-resistant than all the previous versions. It had an enhanced ability to resists even the deep scratches that would otherwise weaken the glass. It was also claimed to be more flexible.
4. Corning Gorilla Glass 4
With better damage and scratch resistance and the capacity to be made thinner and retain the same performance as before, it was announced in November 2014.
5. Corning Gorilla Glass 5
The introduction of the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 offered better resistance to cracking from drops. It was first used on Samsung Galaxy Note 7. It was introduced in July 2016.
6. Corning Gorilla Glass SR+
Corning introduced a glass for the wearables in August 2016 and was first used on the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch.
7. Corning Gorilla Glass 6
In July 2018, Corning introduced Gorilla Glass 6, similar to Gorilla Glass 5 in scratch resistance, but it was mainly developed to withstand multiple drops from even greater heights. It was first used on the Samsung Galaxy S10.
8. Corning Gorilla Glass DX/DX+
In July 2018, Corning introduced the Gorilla Glass DX_, which replaced the SR+ and was first used on the Samsung Galaxy Watch.
9. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus
In July 2020, Corning introduced the Gorilla Glass Victus and claimed it is twice as resistant to scratches as the 6th generation. It was first used on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
