What Is Google Adsense and How Does It Work?
If you look back a few years on the Internet, you'll see that advertising was done in a manner that was very similar to other forms of media such as television, or, more accurately, what you'd see in a newspaper.
You'd go to a website, and somewhere along the way, you'd notice a banner (typically pretty huge and numerous), which would display an advertisement for whoever was paying for ad space on your site.
However, there was a flaw in this type of promotion. It wasn't taking advantage of the fact that the ads weren't in a newspaper, but rather on the Internet.
You've undoubtedly noticed a number of similar things as you've looked through the pages. You're shopping for a watch on an online store, but you end up seeing a banner for an automobile.
While you may want to buy a car at some point in the future, right now you're looking for a watch, and it would have been ideal if the banner advertised one.
That's exactly what the Google engineers were thinking, so they came up with a brilliant solution. Google AdSense is a type of targeted advertising service.
Instead of going through hoops to acquire some banner on your site that your viewers aren't interested in, you (as a web designer / website owner) simply assign some screen real estate.
After that, you join up for the Google AdSense program, upload a little bit of code into your webpage, and Google assures that a banner will show in the area you select, displaying ads appropriate to your site's content.
Because Google is a search engine corporation, it is quite easy for them to do this. It looks for key terms on your page, then searches a database of websites for ones that are relevant to what's on your page, and voila: a targeted ad.
Each time a visitor clicks on an adsense banner on your site, you (the webmaster) receive a payment. People are truly interested in what's in the banner (otherwise, why would they be on your page?). This is bound to happen more frequently than with a typical banner.
However, for those who wish to advertise, this works beautifully. It's for the same purpose as well. The best part about Google AdSense is that all banner content is relevant.
This relevance is both the secret to the program's success and the reason for everyone's happiness. The advertiser gets a relevantly placed ad, the publisher gets paid for their content, and Google gets a split.
Of course, in terms of appearance and operation, Google has set very high standards for its AdSense program. You can only have two of these banners on your website, and Google will only inject text into them.
AdSense advertising is less intrusive than traditional advertising, which is an added benefit. However, because it's likely that visitors would miss the banner entirely, you need properly place it.
Finally, Google AdSense is a unique advertising scheme in that the adverts are related to the website's content. Anyone who wishes to advertise does so at the expense of Google. Anyone who wants to put adverts on their website can do so using AdSense, and Google will pay them for it.
All transactions are handled by Google, and advertisers and publishers have access to analytics that assist them analyze and manage their campaign's efficacy.
From site users to advertisers, the entire process is elegant, easy, and effective, which is one of the reasons Google is known for their creativity and forward thinking.
