What is God?
I have a problem with God's mind. I did not grow up in a religious household. I believe there is more to me, but I just don't know how to think or feel about it.
“I grew up in a family where God is portrayed as judging and punishing. I can’t even hear the word ‘God’ without feeling anxious. How can I open my heart to God when I believe in God? ”
“How can I believe in God when so many bad things happen to people? If there really is a God, why does he allow these things to happen? ”
“God as a person does not work for me. The men in my life were angry and controlled me. I do not feel safe to open up to a god. ”
These are just a few of the comments I hear from my clients as I work to help them open up to a personal source of spiritual guidance.
The New Testament is very clear about who God is:
John 4:24
"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
1 John 4: 8
He that loved not, 'know' not God; for God is love.
1 John 4:16
"God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him".
John tells us that “God is a Spirit” and that “God is love.” He tells us that when we show love, we are in God and God is in us.
My personal experience is that God is love, peace, happiness, and truth, and that God is everywhere, both within us and in all the world around us. When our hearts are open to love, compassion and kindness to ourselves and others, we feel the fullness of God within us and the security of being in the midst of God.
My experience is that God is always there to guide us to our best interests. One of the ways I help my clients achieve the wisdom God has for us is always to think of the spiritual person who is here for you. This could be a Pastor, a counselor, a guardian angel, a dear relative in the past, or a much higher, more intelligent part of you - a higher identity. By opening a study with a wise and loving person who wants nothing more than to guide you to your happiness and full self-expression, you are open to divine guidance and wisdom.
This guide is your birthright. We were not left alone in the world to take care of ourselves. However, you will not know this love and guidance until you open your heart to God. My clients often open the door to learn about the spiritual source of love and wisdom and discover the truth of God for themselves. They are no longer held hostage by superstitious beliefs - that God judges, controls and punishes; atheism; that God will never work for them personally; that they should receive the love of God; that God can prevent people from being harmed.
You will come to know God as you open your heart to learning about loving deeds for yourself and others. When your main goal is to learn how to love yourself and others, instead of constantly trying to find love or avoidance of pain, you will come to know God.
If the word "God" is a bad start to you, turn it into a Spirit, or Higher Power, whatever works for you. God is not a vague being. God is the eternal experience of love, compassion, truth, peace and happiness that is always available to you whenever you choose to open your heart.
