These heat-trapping pollutants, including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapor, and synthetic fluorinated gases, sometimes known as greenhouse gases, are what cause the greenhouse effect.
Despite the fact that the earth's climate has changed numerous times over the past 800,000 years due to natural cycles and fluctuations, the current era of global warming is solely attributable to human activity, specifically the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, petrol and natural gas, which produces the greenhouse effect. The bad news is that we're not progressing at a fast enough rate. Experts estimate that by 2030, we must reduce global carbon emissions by up to 40% if we are to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
The international community must take immediate and decisive action to make it happen. We must electrify our vehicles, decarbonize electricity production by equitably switching from fossil fuel-based energy production to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, and improve the energy efficiency of our structures, appliances, and enterprises.
What connection does severe weather have to global warming?
Scientists agree that the earth's changing climate is causing longer and hotter heat waves, more frequent droughts, heavier rainfall, and bigger hurricanes.
For instance, researchers found in 2015 that the prolonged drought in California, which is the state's worst water shortage in 1,200 years, had been made 15 to 20% worse by global warming. They stated that the probability of further droughts of equal size has nearly quadrupled over the last century. According to a 2016 National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine report, it is now obvious how climate change is connected to some extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, and heavy rains.
