This year, unlike in recent years, devastating monsoon floods have been a stark reminder that Pakistan is bearing the brunt of the climate emergency. The increased death toll, economic loss and damage to infrastructure and livelihoods, which has a huge impact on vulnerable populations, requires an immediate but coordinated humanitarian assistance and response. In humanitarian coordination, we as Pakistan Humanitarian Forum (PHF) and National Humanitarian Network (NHN) representing NGOs and NGOs reaffirm our commitment to a resilient Pakistan. This ease of access to a disaster-stricken area could help extend early life-saving and critical support to people in need. We hope that a joint response with government, including disaster management authorities, will lead to a clear commitment to help communities at risk.
The monsoon season continues to affect several provinces of Pakistan, causing floods, landslides and severe weather-related incidents, resulting in a growing humanitarian impact. Pakistan has received 60% of its total normal monsoon rainfall in just three weeks since the start of the monsoon season and is expected to increase with heavy rainfall in the coming days. The gaps in the provision of life-saving and critical support can be effectively filled by humanitarian funding provided through NGOs/NGOs that have operational capacity and presence on the ground in the flood-affected areas of Pakistan. INGOs and NGOs were quick to respond. However, the lack of an emergency appeal or request for help can be a barrier to expanding the flood response.
Please be assured that PHF and NHN members are equally providing relief operations in Balochistan, Sindh, KP, Punjab, Northern Areas, AJK and focus on supporting Food & CASH, Shelter, WASH, Health and fodder for specific flood affected population and are mobilized , to carry out and support a comprehensive joint needs assessment in the affected areas. PHF and NHN member organizations are highly capable of responding to the current flood situation. They have already reached and supported more than 20,000 affected families across Pakistan and can do more if they get immediate access and funding.
They have available technical resources and capacity to provide relief assistance and implement rehabilitation mechanism in flood affected areas of Pakistan.
It is essential to enable and facilitate NGOs and NGOs to work with equal capacity and flexibility in alleviating the suffering of vulnerable communities, including women, children and the elderly.
In view of the worsening and evolving flood situation, the forums and their member organizations are present on the ground to protect the humanitarian principles for providing assistance to the people at risk as a collective effort to support the efforts of the Government of Pakistan to manage the current emergency situation as quickly as possible. .49 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, most in Sindh, claiming 777 lives and 59,665 houses damaged since mid-June, bringing the total number of houses damaged to 176,436, mostly in Sindh and Balochistan. As of August 21, around 1,868,098 people have been rescued and 317,896 individuals are living in relief camps across the country, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). In Sindh, as of 20 August, 1,356,863 people were affected, 309,944 households were affected and around 495,381 were displaced due to floods in the province.
