Any car made after 1988 can run on a mixture of 10% ethanol and 90% petrol. A flexible-fuel vehicle can operate with an ethanol mixture of up to 85%. Changes are needed in this ratio as alcohol-based fuels rust.
Fuel tanks and engines must be replaced with flexible fuel tanks. In the US, there is a special index used to analyze the proportions of the mixture and adjust it accordingly to ensure that the fuel is burned clean. This is done by adjusting the timing and injection of the fuel, and is automatic. Much flexible fuel, tanks are also required to use special engine oil.
Why use ethanol?
Ethanol provides drivers with a natural alternative to mineral-based fuels, as ethanol is more environmentally friendly and a renewable source that appears to be another suitable driver-friendly alternative. Studies show that using 10% ethanol mixture reduces carbon monoxide levels by up to 17%, CO2 emissions by 4.2%, and hydrogen emissions by up to 5%. By using an 85% mixture of ethanol greenhouse gas the results are reduced by 37%
Which countries use ethanol fuel?
There are three countries currently using ethanol in their vehicles - the US, Brazil, and Sweden. Brazil has been using ethanol blends in its fuel since the 1970s, and a law is required by law that all petroleum mixtures account for 29-25% of ethanol.
Sweden is the only country with a flexible fuel economy in Europe, although there are plans to introduce up to 85% petrol mixes in other European countries. The US has many vehicles designed to use an 85% ethanol fuel mix. These flexible fuel vehicles make up 4 million vehicles in the US, although less than 1% of these vehicles currently use 85% ethanol blend.
The future of ethanol-based fuels
At present, the future of ethanol fuel blends seems a bit bleak. Until petroleum companies are able to make gasoline and ethanol blends work more efficiently and provide a better range, people will continue to use gasoline and small ethanol blends as much as 10%. Once this barrier is fixed, ethanol will be widely used in flexible fuel vehicles.
Opportunities for future growth in the ethanol industry. Last year, an energy bill was introduced that required refineries to start using renewable energy. The national ethanol industry currently produces more than 4 billion gallons of ethanol per year, and most of the plants are produced on a regular basis. The ethanol industry will be much better in the years to come.
Except for an ethanol-based fuel system and a separate powertrain rating, FFV's are similar to their regular fuel counterparts only. Although fuel savings (miles per gallon) are generally low in terms of increased ethanol levels (engines are designed for fuel), many FFV has improved speed performance when operating at higher ethanol concentrations.
