The men's national teams of FIFA's member associations will compete in the international football competition known as the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar will host the 22nd FIFA World Cup from November 20 to December 18, 2022; After the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan, this is only the second World Cup to be held entirely in Asia.[A] France is the defending champions, having defeated Croatia 4–2 in the 2018 final. It is the most expensive World Cup ever, with an estimated cost of over $220 billion[2]. Officials in Qatar, including the organizing CEO Nasser Al Khater, dispute this figure, claiming that the actual cost is $8 billion[3]. Other figures pertain to the overall development of Qatar's infrastructure since Qatar was awarded the World Cup in 2010.
The final tournament will have 32 teams in it, and the field will grow to 48 teams for the 2026 edition. This World Cup will be held in November and December to avoid the extreme heat of Qatar.[B] It will be played over a shorter period, 29 days, with 64 matches taking place in eight locations in five cities. Along with the 31 teams chosen through the qualification process, the Qatari national football team, who were competing in their first World Cup, was automatically entered. Qatar did not win any of its three group games; They were the first host nation to lose every game, the first host nation to be eliminated, and the second host nation (after South Africa in 2010) to fail to advance past the first round of the tournament.[7] In the first round of the tournament finals, the teams competed for points in eight round-robin groups of four teams, with the two teams with the most points moving on to the next round. Due to Qatar's treatment of migrant workers, and women, and its position on LGBT rights, as well as Qatar's climate, lack of strong football culture, and allegations of bribery for hosting rights and wider FIFA corruption, the decision to host the World Cup in Qatar, have been a source of controversy[D]. These 16 teams advanced to the knockout stage, where three rounds of play were held to determine which teams would participate in the final, which will be held on December 18, 2022, at Lusail Stadium.
Schedule
In contrast to previous FIFA World Cups, which were typically held in June and July due to Qatar's intense summer heat and frequently high humidity, the 2022 World Cup will be held in November and December.[4][24][28] As a result, the World Cup is unusually held in the middle of the domestic association football leagues' seasons, which typically begin in late July or August. This includes all of the major European leagues, which have been required to incorporate extended breaks into their domestic schedules to To avoid playing group matches the following year, major European competitions have scheduled their respective group matches to be played before the World Cup[30]. The match schedule was confirmed by FIFA in July 2020[31]. The group stage was scheduled to begin on November 21 with four matches per day. After Qatar lobbied FIFA to allow their team to open the tournament, the Qatar vs. Ecuador game was moved to November 20.[32][33] The final will be played on December 18, 2022, National Day, at Lusail Iconic Stadium.[34][31] The matches for each group were assigned to the following stadiums:[34] Groups A, B, E, and F: Groups C, D, G, and H: Al Bayt Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, and Ahmad bin Ali Stadium Lusail Famous Arena, Arena 974, Instruction City Arena, Al Janoub Arena
FIFA affirmed the gathering stage scene and start-up times on 1 April 2022, following the draw.[35][36] On 11 August, it was affirmed that Qatar versus Ecuador had been presented one day, presently turning into the competition's initial match, while Senegal versus the Netherlands, which would have opened the competition under the first timetable, had been redistributed to the opened up timeslot.[37]
Prize cash
In April 2022, FIFA declared the awards for every partaking country. Each certified group will get $1.5 million preceding the opposition to take care of arrangement costs with each group getting something like $9 million in prize cash. The total prize pool for this edition will be $440 million, which is $40 million more than the previous tournament's prize pool.[38]
