Electric ball valves, also known as motorized ball valves, employ a revolving ball with a bore to control the flow of a media, such as liquid or gas. An electric actuator that can turn the rotating ball is in charge of managing it. Ball valves are one of the most often used valves due to their ease of use, durability, long service life, and wide range of application applications.
Electric ball valves with two ports, an intake, and an outlet, are two-way valves. The valve controls the flow of media in one direction by opening or closing it. A two-way ball valve is commonly referred to as a shut-off valve. A shut-off valve is a popular name for a two-way ball valve.
Three ports are available on 3-way electric ball valves. The ball's bore is not straight but rather in the shape of an L or T., This enables the valve to perform various circuit tasks (flow directions). It is capable of distributing, mixing, or diverting flow in the desired direction. As a result, any three ports can be used as an inlet or outlet.
Ball valves with an ISO-top are among the electric ball valve accessories (suitable for an electric actuator).
Electric Actuated:
A ball valve actuated by electricity can be broken into two parts—the ball valve with the electric actuator (servo motor). The electric motor on a 2-way ball valve may spin the ball 90 degrees to be fully open or fully closed. The electric actuator can turn the ball between different circuits depending on whether the ball is an L-port or T-port ball valve. They're usually connected with a standard flange that conforms to ISO 5211.
That allows you to replace the electric actuator or ball valve with one with the same flange size. Electric ball valves come in various housings and sizes, allowing you to pick the ideal one for your application.
What is Actuated Ball Valves?
A quarter-turn ball valve is a valve that regulates the flow of media through a hollow revolving ball. The valve opens, and the media can pass through when the hollow part of the ball aligns with the flow (pipe or hose). The valve closes when the solid part of the ball is parallel to the flow, which is accomplished by rotating the ball 90 degrees (hence the name of the quarter-turn valve).
You may also adjust the valve's position between totally open and entirely closed, allowing you to fine-tune the flow. Ball valves typically have two ports, one for inlet and one for outflow. Three ports (L or T) are also available, and how the 90-degree rotation of the ball directs the media flow depends on how the valve is built and fitted. Ball valves with four ports are feasible but uncommon.
A valve stem is linked to the ball and controls its rotation in ball valves. The valve stem is attached to a manual handle to operate the valve. On the other hand, the valve stem can be attached to a pneumatic or electric rotary actuator and spun to open and close the ball valve automatically and remotely.
Actuator overview
A valve actuator is a gadget that allows you to manipulate a valve from a distance. The actuator is a quarter-turn actuator if it controls a quarter-turn valve. Instead of a manual lever, an actuator can be mounted on the valve to prevent it mechanically and remotely. Actuators create the torque needed to operate (rotate) a ball valve using a power source. The power source for most actuators is either pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic.
Because of the differences in this power source, numerous designs result, each with its benefits and drawbacks for specific applications (discussed below). An actuator may include additional features such as position indicators, manual override, and the torque generating component.
Pneumatic actuators
Ball valves are controlled by pneumatic actuators, which convert compressed air energy into mechanical motion. A 90-degree turn in a ball valve necessitates a rotary mechanical action.
Single-acting and double-acting pneumatic actuator ball valves are available. A single-acting pneumatic actuator turns the valve with a single compressed air input and returns it to its usual position with a spring. A double-acting pneumatic actuator uses two close air inputs to turn the valve to its original work.
Principle of operation
The rack and pinion mechanism is the most popular pneumatic actuator for ball valves. That is made up of the rack (a linear gear) and the pinion (a circular gear) (a circular gear). The frame is connected to a piston pushed by compressed air to achieve linear motion. The pinion converts this linear motion into circular motion. The pinion moves a ball valve's stem between open and closed states.
Solenoid valves manage pressurized air to control the pneumatic actuator for ball valves. The solenoid valve is energized by electrical impulses from the controller to either open or close, allowing pressurized air to pass through to both piston sides of the pneumatic actuator. The piston pushes the rack, which rotates the pinion attached to the ball valve's stem.
How does an Electric Valve Actuator Work?
Ball valves are a prevalent sort of valve in everyday life, and they're mainly employed to regulate and control fluid flow. Ball valves can be equipped with various driving devices to produce multiple control techniques, such as electric ball valves, pneumatic ball valves, hydraulic ball valves, and so on, depending on the working conditions.
It is open while the ball hole is parallel to the flow, and it closes when the valve handle is rotated 90 degrees. They can provide linear or rotary motion and work with a variety of valves, including ball and butterfly valves. Electric valve actuators respond to commands via remote control or centralized process control systems, making them ideal for handling systems that are difficult to access or spread out over a broad region.
Process control systems can send scheduled and programmed commands to electric actuators from a centralized system, allowing businesses to automate the system and enhance reliability.
Working principle:
The flow through the Ball valve is controlled by a hollow, perforated, pivoting ball.
The valve handle is moved by a transmission, which causes the ball to rotate around an axis perpendicular to the flow. It is open when the hole in the ball is parallel to the flow; When the valve handle is pivoted 90 degrees, it closes.
Advantages of electric ball valve
1 It has a simple structure, is light in weight and volume, and is simple to disassemble and repair.
2 The packing seal of the valve stem is not readily broken since it merely rotates, and the sealing capacity rises as the medium pressure increases.
3 The fluid impedance is low, and the full-bore ball valve's flow resistance is essentially non-existent. Pneumatic ball valves have one of the lowest fluid resistance ratings of any valve type.
4 The action is easy and quick, and it only requires a 90-degree rotation from full open to full close, making it ideal for long-distance control.
Five can use It in various applications, ranging from a few millimeters to a few meters and from high vacuum to high pressure.
Disadvantages Of Electric Ball Valve:
The structure has become increasingly complicated and prone to failure. And the technical requirements for on-site maintenance personnel are relatively higher; the motor operation generates heat; if the adjustment is made too frequently, it is easy to cause the motor to overheat, produce thermal protection, and also increases reducer gear wear; also, the operation is slow from the regulator's output signal to the response of the control valve; It takes a long time for the actuator to move to the desired position, which is inferior to pneumatic and hydraulic actuators.
Poor throttling characteristics:
High-velocity flows may cause erosion of the partially exposed seat in a throttling position. As a result, they're not suggested for long-term throttling.
Ball valves can stick in place and become jammed when used to regulate the wrong types of fluids, such as slurries, due to trapped suspended particles. That can lead to the valve wearing out, damaged, or stuck.
Electric Ball Valve Working Principle
The electric actuator and ball valve make up most of an electric ball valve. The body of the plug is a ball that rotates 90 degrees. The electric ball valve is the primary choice in the controlling flow system, not just for throttling, cutting off, on-off, and turning. It possesses a wide range of properties, including pressure resistance, temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, minor flow resistance, extended service life, and applications.
The electric ball valve is primarily controlled by the electric actuator, regulating the electric flow. The electric actuator's input and output signals are 4-20mA, and the 220VAC power supply's standard signals. The motor group controls the opening and closing, distribution, and modifies the flow direction of the medium or adjusts the proportion of the valve core rotation; that is, the valve opening is proportionate to the control fluid or percentage.
The fluid passage is opened or closed by rotating the sphere 90 degrees on the fluid path bore axis and turning the bore (s) open or closed, with one or more holes in the center position on the end of a shaft, mostly elastomer (may also be metal as required) between the two seals.
Working totally open or entirely closed is ideal. They aren't designed to control flow precisely.
