It is often said that "knowledge is power."It is a fact that there is always a debate on this issue. However, we cannot deny the importance of education in the life of human beings.
The term education has been derived from the Latin word "educated," which means the act of teaching or training. According to some, it has also come from another Latin term, "educate," which means "to bring up," "to raise."Some others believe that it has been originated from the Latin word "educere," which means "to lead forth" or "to come out
."
Moral values refer to a set of principles that help an individual to evaluate right and wrong. People generally apply moral values to justify decisions, intentions, and actions, and it also defines an individual's personal character. An individual with high moral values typically displays integrity, courage, respect, fairness, honesty, and compassion.
GENERALLY ACCEPTED MORAL VALUES
1.UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND KINDNESS: Real love is unconditional, that we should not demand anything in return for our love. If your love is unconditional, it will follow kindness.
2.HONESTY, TRUTHFULNESS & TRUSTWORTHY: Students must be taught Honesty as the best policy and cheating as the worst policy. They must be reluctant to tell a lie and doing wrong things. It is possible through the inculcation of moral values.
3.HARDWORK: Nowadays, children are not ready to do hard work, and they wanted to achieve everything through shortcuts because they are lazy and do not place any value on hard work. Children must realize the importance of hard work, and there is no shortcut to success.
4.RESPECT FOR OTHERS: Respect for others includes respect others, respecting different religions, races, sexes, ideas, and lifestyles.
5.CO-OPERATION: Cooperation is an important moral value without which a common goal cannot be achieved. This will lead to caring and sharing, which is essential for social living.
6.COMPASSION: Compassion means being sensitive to the needs of people. If there were more compassion globally, there would be less homeless, hunger, wars, and unhappiness.
7.FORGIVENESS: Anger, in most cases, is caused by an unwillingness to forgive. There would be less violence and fighting in school if students could learn this moral value.
Other related moral values are Integrity, Care, Sacrifice, Just and Fair, Keep promises, Does no harm, Responsibility, Patience, Self-control, and Tolerance.
IS IT NECESSARY THAT MORAL VALUES BE A PART OF OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM? WHY ARE MORAL VALUES TO BE TAUGHT TO THE CHILDREN?
Today, the world is suffering from various challenges like Crimes, Conflicts, hatred, and distrust between communities, poverty, unemployment, scarcity of resources, pollution, violence, terrorism, etc., from many sides. These all together make a grave danger to the existence of humanity. The recent increase in the number of criminal cases and an increasing number of nursing homes indicates the depletion of the moral values in society. Calculation of moral values is to be taught to the students.
One must be trained in moral values from the beginning of life. The holistic development of an individual without moral values is incomplete. Therefore moral values must be taught and should be an indispensable part of our education system. every child must be trained for their future responsibilities. Apart from teachers, parents also should play a vital and active role in teaching moral values to the children. Parents must keep this in mind that children tend to imitate the parents and consider them as their role model. The parents should display good behavior and character and set an example of a disciplined life. Good parenting is essential for the overall personality development of a child.
