Global warming and rising sea levels, yet water shortages. As the earth warms and the glaciers melt, sea levels begin to rise - and what do we have - pipeline blockage and the state of "water, water everywhere and not a drop of drinking"! After a long winter, warm and sunny weather comes to an end - and plumbing for many of us.
I am lucky to live in an area that has not yet blocked the use of plumbing, but because I have a water meter, I am very careful about how much water I use. I would like to be able to say that it is my only natural concern, and that matters to me, but the amount of my debt is the most important factor right now.
I already have 3 buckets of water and 2 plastic buckets to store rainwater, but they do not last long when irrigating dry beans. So I've started saving my shower water! Any recycled water is known as "gray water" and can be bath or shower water, washing water or water from your washing machine.
You can use this water in your garden on plants and trees, but it is not a good idea to irrigate your fruit and vegetables in this way to save water due to the chemicals used in various soap products. Also, if you want to save water in your washing machine, you need to switch to non-bio washing powder or liquid.
Washing water requires filtration first - but this can be done by pouring water stored in an irrigation pot or bucket with an old tight pair (does not stop using old tiles?) Therefore, my shower water is now collected and stored instead of entering directly into the canal. My neighbor has been very helpful and has put an extension in the pipe connected to the exit out of my bath so that it can now pour into a large container.
But he did it in a way that meant I could go back to the trenches in the winter. I have to add that I live in a bungalow, so this was not a very big job. The container was given to me and my neighbor had a piece of plumbing in his garage, so there was no cost involved in saving this water.
I can save up to 50 gallons [50 L] of water per shower, enough to irrigate my undeveloped trees and plants and roots that are not yet old enough to absorb enough moisture on their own. I never thought it was right to water the grass, although I see that some people want their grass to be as green, spotless and brown as mine.
If your drain is in place which means you can’t keep a container nearby, and you don’t want to carry irrigation cans in your house, there is a gadget now available at most garden stores and online. It is called a “drought” and, basically, the length of a pipe with a “lamp” near the other end and uses atmospheric pressure to draw water up the bathtub and pipe. A little immersion of the lamp will start the water flow and, if the pipe is long enough, you can take another case through the window into the container.
The pipe can be expanded using standard pipe connectors. I know you can also clean water with certain plants, so after irrigating the garden with stored water I think I will check my books to see which reeds will clean the water in my washing machine - I will be able to fill the pond!
