What is earth ?

The only astronomical object known to harbor life is Earth, which is third from the Sun. Despite the vast amounts of water in the Solar System, only Earth has liquid surface water. Around 71% of the surface of the Earth is covered by the seas, dwarfing its lakes, rivers, and polar ice. The remaining 29% of the Earth's surface is made up of land, which includes continents and islands. Mountain ranges, volcanoes, and earthquakes are all products of the combination of the Earth's surface's several slowly moving tectonic plates. The planet's liquid outer core produces the magnetic field that shapes the magnetosphere and deflects dangerous solar winds.

The majority of the atmosphere on Earth is made up of N2 and O2. The greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and others.

The fifth-largest planet in the solar system in terms of size and mass is Earth, which is the third planet from the Sun. Its near-surface habitats are the only areas in the cosmos known to support life, which is its only distinguishing characteristic. It is identified by the glyph. The word "Earth" is derived from Old English and Germanic meanings for "ground" and "earth," and it is the only name for a planet in the solar system that is not derived from Greco-Roman mythology. English is the international language of astronomy.

Enlightened philosophers have viewed Earth as a planet like the other planets of the solar system ever since the Copernican revolution of the 16th century, when the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus developed a sun-centered model of the universe (see heliocentric system). Concurrent maritime trips offered concrete evidence that Earth is a globe, just as Galileo's use of his recently developed telescope in the early 17th century quickly revealed that numerous other planets are also globes. However, the idea of Earth as a roughly spherical globe rather than a flat thing was not confirmed by direct human observation until the start of the space age, when images from rockets and orbiting spacecraft first showed the tremendous curvature of Earth's horizon.

When Apollo 8 took astronauts around the moon in December 1968, the Earth was first seen by humans as a whole sphere floating in the pitch-blackness of space. Robotic spacecraft like Galileo and the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft in the 1990s used their cameras to take additional, unique pictures of the planet while they were travelling to places beyond it.

Earth would appear bright and bluish if seen from another planet in the solar system. The aspects of its atmosphere that would be the easiest to observe using a huge telescope would be the swirling white cloud patterns of mid-latitudes and tropical storms, which are distributed in roughly latitudinal belts around the planet. Because of the clouds above and the snow and ice below, the polar areas would also appear to be a beautiful white color. The far darker blue-black waters would be visible behind the shifting cloud patterns, occasionally being broken up by tawny desert land patches. The majority of human life is located in green environments, which are difficult to detect from space.
