Define Concrete

Concrete is made up of the three principal ingredients like cement, Aggregate, and water and these materials are mixed together to produce a liquid that can be poured & bored into almost any shape and with the time, turns into a rock like material.

Why is Concrete so Famous & Popular?

Concrete is popular for many reasons.

 1). The materials used to make concrete are readily available anywhere in the world.

2). Concrete is a low technology system. Complicated equipment isn't required. Concrete structures can be formed to any scale from the paving slab, right up to a massive hydroelectric Dam. And concrete can be poured into any shape. So, depending on the mixture of cements Aggregate and water we use, we can produce materials with very different properties.

3). Concrete is usually strong in compression and stiff. But it’s weak in tension and we can get over that by reinforcing it. Usually with steel to produce a material that is both strong in compression and tension.

4). Finally, concrete is durable in a wide range of environments. Not just the buildings we live in, but in nuclear power stations in offshore structures in high-temperature furnaces.

These are the reasons why concrete is so popular.

Appearance & Size

 It is a white or pink or light to dark grey cementing material.  It’s individual particles are nearly 1/50th of Portland cement’s particle i.e. extremely fine as average Portland cement’s particle size is in the range 0.1 µm to 0.3 µm corresponding minimum specific area is 15,000 m2/kg. 

Production

During the manufacturing of Silicon metal or ferrosilicon alloys through reduction of high purity quartz in a submerged-arc electric furnace heated to 20000C with coal coke and fueled by wood chips, it is produced as a by-product.


Is it a chemical admixture?

Its chemical action is no different from pozzolanas. It composes of at least 85 percent of ultra-fine amorphous non-crystalline (glassy) spherical silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles. No, it isn’t a chemical admixture. There is no chemical composition formulated for it.

Properties

The more  finer the particle size more will be surface area and more will be its pozzolanic properties.

Uses

·        Reduction in bleeding of fresh concrete

·    Strength and Durability is improved in hardened concrete

·    Reduction in segregation of fresh concrete
