A computer is a device that may be configured to automatically perform a series of mathematical or logical operations (computation). Modern digital electronic computers are capable of running programs, which are generalized sets of operations. These apps give computers the ability to carry out a variety of tasks. A computer system is a minimally functional computer that contains the peripheral devices, operating system (primary software), and hardware required for proper operation. The sole purpose of early computers was to perform computations. Since ancient times, simple manual tools like the abacus have supported humans in performing computations. Early in the Industrial Revolution, a few mechanical devices were created to automate time-consuming, difficult processes, such creating weaving patterns. Early in the 20th century, more advanced electrical machines performed specialized analogue calculations. During World War II, the first digital electronic calculators were created. Following the development of the first semiconductor transistors in the late 1940s, silicon-based MOS FET (MOS transistor), monolithic integrated circuit chip technology, and the microprocessor and microcomputer revolutions in the late 1950s and 1970s respectively, were developed. Since then, transistor counts have drastically increased, as have the speed, power, and adaptability of computers.

 

 

Computers In History

Before the invention of computers, people utilized sticks, stones, and bones as counting aids. More computing tools, such as the abacus and Napier's bones, were created as technology and the human brain evolved over time. When conducting simple mathematical tasks, these devices were utilized as computers.

Abacus

The Abacus, which the Chinese are credited with creating some 4000 years ago, is thought to have been the earliest computer. The invention of the abacus marks the start of computer history.

Abacus operation:

To conduct mathematical calculations, the abacus operator would move the beads on the device in accordance with predetermined rules. People still use abacuses in certain nations, including China, Russia, and Japan.

 

Early in the 1820s, Charles Babbage, widely referred to as the "Father of the Modern Computer," created the Difference Engine. A mechanical computer called the Difference Engine was able to carry out basic mathematical operations. It utilizes steam to operate, since it was a steam-powered calculator with the ability to solve numerical tables like logarithm tables.

 

Computers of the Second Generation

 

The second generation of computers was popularly referred to as existing between 1957 and 1963. The era of transistor computers was at hand. Transistors, which were inexpensive, are employed in the second generation of computers. Additionally small and using less power, transistors. Computers made with transistors operate more quickly than older models. Magnetic cores were utilized for primary memory, and magnetic discs and tapes were used for secondary memory. COBOL and FORTRAN are used as assembly language and programming languages in second-generation computers. These computers also use batch processing and multiprogramming operating systems.

 

IBM 1620, IBM 7094, CDC 1604, CDC 3600, etc. are a few examples.
