Cockfighting is a very popular sport in the South Eastern states of India. There are many names for cock fighting like cock fighting, kotsai, webpor, bare foot fighting, katu cock fighting.
Cockfighting is usually held on Kanum Pongal, the last day of Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu in Chennai, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Theni, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Karur, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Perambalur, Madurai and Villupuram districts. Cockfighting is conducted with roosters just like climbing and kite fighting.
Just as bulls and goats are prepared for competition, so are roosters. Preparing roosters for fighting is very simple; Because roosters naturally have a fighting nature from birth. The roosters are fed small grains, cashews, feet, liver and boiled meat during training. These make the body stronger than regular food. They rehearse with cocks ready to fight.
The roosters of the competition are divided into groups according to their height and weight, and then the competition is conducted between them. If the unit of roosters does not fall to the ground during the fight, it will be given a 15-minutes rest, its injuries will be repaired and the pain will be treated. A cockfight lasts for about one and a half hours. After 15 minutes of fighting, 5 minutes rest is given.
If one of the two roosters dies in the field, falls to the ground, leaves the field or faints, the other rooster is declared the winner and the winning rooster is awarded the prize. There are two types of cockfighting. Veppor and knife are cockfights.
Veppor Roosters are stronger than Kathikal Roosters and Kathikal Roosters easy to tied. Thus the Kathikaal Roosters cannot be allowed to fight with veppor Roosters. The cock used in veppor cockfights is called Asil. Aadukalam, released in Tamil in 2011 and directed by Vetri Maran, is based on the cockfighting that takes place in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
