What is CNC Machining Process and What are the Key Industries which Rely on Precision Machine Shops.

Precision manufacturing is behind almost all the major advancements in electronics and computing and advancements in electronics and computing are behind the ongoing advancements in precision manufacturing. This has become a virtuous cycle in which both are benefitting from each other and as a result almost all other industries have also seen centuries worth of development in a matter of a few years.

It took a couple of centuries to get from basic industrial manufacturing to the basics of precision manufacturing but today precision manufacturing is a very widespread industry. What is the CNC Machining Process?

Computer Numerical Control machining process is the process by which a CNC metal machine works on a workpiece, generally made of a metal of any kind, chipping, sanding and removing small parts, grains and pieces of the said workpiece in order to make a product.

Take for example the metal back of a modern smartphone. It all starts from a simple plate of metal. The CNC machine is fed specifications based upon which it starts removing material from the plate. First it removes larger pieces and gradually it removes smaller and smaller pieces, moving on to making precise holes and finally sanding and polishing the final product. 

The most important factor to be considered in the whole process is that since the entire product is made from one metal plate, there are no joints of connectors in it, hence the structural integrity of the finished product is  simply incomparable to any other method of metal shaping and processing.

As the entire process is done by computers, a precision machine shop can deliver the same high quality of finished product time and time again with near zero variation in the final product regardless of the quantity in which the product is manufactured. This scale and precision is what has made CNC manufacturing indispensable to many key industries.

Considering the wide scale applicability of precision manufacturing processes as well as the unmatchable quality of the products that the precision machine shop are able to deliver, a very large number of industries which form the very cornerstones of modern economy and western civilization stand. 

  • Aerospace and Defense: Among the earliest adopters of precision manufacturing has been aerospace and defense. Civil aviation has been able to achieve the large scale that at any given point of time, there are thousands of modern large jets flying with tens of thousands of people. The high degree of reliability in modern aviation is achieved thanks completely to precision manufacturing. Same is the case with production of precision defense equipment. 

  • Health and Human Services: The growth of modern medicine, especially surgical and diagnostic medicine which relies on conducting medical tests is because of this advancement in manufacturing.  In almost all cases where implants are placed in the body, such implants are essentially CNC metal machine products. These have to be small and very well finished and thus CNC is the preferred way for making them.

  • Communication and High Tech Devices: Everything from laptop computers to tablets and smartphones and now even wearable devices are made using CNC manufacturing. All these are highly miniaturized devices which simply cannot be made with any other manufacturing process. In the absence of CNC manufacturing, modern laptops would still be the size of briefcases and phones would still be the size of bricks. 

In addition to these, there are a number of industries which also rely on CNC shops like automotive industry, energy, plastics etc.
