Large volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have been pumped into the atmosphere by human activity over the past century. The majority of the gases result from the energy-producing burning of fossil fuels.
Greenhouse gases surround the Earth like a blanket, trapping energy and causing the atmosphere to warm. The earth needs this phenomenon, known as the greenhouse effect, in order to support life. However, when greenhouse gases increase, the climate shifts and has harmful consequences on ecosystems and human health.
Since the end of the previous ice age, which was many thousand years ago, people have adapted to the stable climate that we now experience. Our water resources, agricultural, power and transportation infrastructure, as well as other factors, may all be impacted by a warming climate. Our water supplies, agriculture, electricity and transportation infrastructure, the environment, and even our personal health and safety may alter as a result of a warming climate.
There are some climate changes that cannot be stopped and cannot be avoided. Earth will continue to warm because gases like carbon dioxide can linger in the atmosphere for almost a century. Water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and methane all affect the atmosphere. Bright objects like clouds and ice reflect over 30% of the incoming sunlight back into space. In the remaining 70%, the atmosphere absorbs the remaining 30%, with the majority going to the land and ocean. The sun energy that is absorbed warms our world.
The atmosphere's ability to absorb and radiate heat is advantageous for life on Earth. More greenhouse gas molecules are present in the atmosphere today, which results in the atmosphere absorbing more of the infrared radiation generated by the surface. We are improving the effectiveness of the Earth's atmosphere as a greenhouse by increasing the quantity of greenhouse gases. Throughout the history of the Earth, the climate has warmed and cooled.
