What is Cerebrospinal Fluid

The brain is  in a special fluid environment called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A lymphatic, watery fluid that surrounds and protects the skull's brain. It also fills the central canal of the spinal cord. The characteristics of the 

 are as follows: 

 (i) Acts as a shock absorber and protects the brain from damage in the event of a sudden shock. 

 (ii) It nourishes the brain. 

 (iii) Collect and remove waste products from the brain. 

 (iv) It  also helps keep the skull pressure constant. 

 Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF, shown in blue) is composed of the tissues that line the ventricles (cavities) of the brain. It flows in and around the brain and spinal cord, protecting them from injury and providing nutrition. 

 The central nervous system controls and regulates everything you do, including muscle movements, organ function, and even complex thoughts and plans. CSF helps protect this system by acting like a cushion from sudden shocks and damage to the brain and spinal cord. 

 CSF is removed by a procedure called spinal puncture, also known as spinal puncture. Lumbar puncture is usually done in the hospital. Under treatment: 

 You  lie  or sit on the examination table. The doctor cleans the back and injects an anesthetic into the skin to prevent pain during surgery. Your doctor may apply a numbing cream to your back before this injection. When the 

's back is completely paralyzed, the doctor inserts a thin hollow needle between the two vertebrae in the lower spine. Vertebrae are the small spines that make up the spine. 

 Your doctor will receive a small amount of CSF  from you for testing. This will take about 5 minutes. It should be very stationary while the liquid is being inhaled. Your doctor may ask you to lie on your back  12 hours after surgery. This will help you avoid headaches later.

How are the samples used? What is in the cerebrospinal fluid helps doctors diagnose or rule out a variety of illnesses. 

 If there are high levels of substances called immunoglobulins that the body uses to fight disease and other things related to  nerve cells, these may be signs of multiple sclerosis.  If your doctor suspects you have Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia, your body fluids may contain certain types of proteins associated with that disease. The discolored fluid can be a sign of  cerebral hemorrhage (cerebral hemorrhage) or stroke.  Signs of a bacterial or viral infection can tell your doctor that you have a medical condition, such as meningitis or encephalitis.

CSF is vital to how your brain and spinal cord work, protecting and cushioning them from outside forces. CSF leaks can often cause severe symptoms, but this condition is very treatable, and up to 98% of people with it will recover.

 Having a CSF leak causes a drop in fluid pressure inside your head. That causes a condition known as intracranial hypotension (“intracranial” means “inside your skull” and “hypotension” means “lower than normal pressure”). Intracranial hypotension is a rare condition, and about 5 people out of every 100,000 have it.

 However, it's very likely that CSF leaks happen more often than that number suggests. Experts don't know exactly how common CSF leaks are because they're difficult to diagnose. It's also common for healthcare providers to misdiagnose a CSF leak as another condition, like migraine, sinus infections or allergies.
