What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the name of the formation of bumps and dimples on the skin.

Common names for cellulite are orange-peel skin, cottage-cheese skin, hail injuries, and a mattress event.

Cellulite can affect both men and women, but is more common in women, due to the different distribution of fat, muscle, and connective tissue.

Between 80 and 90 percent A Reliable Source for Women may have cellulite at some point in their lives.

Types of cellulite

The cellulite severity scale, published in 2009, assesses the condition in three stages:

Grade 1, or soft: There is a “orange peel” look, between 1 and 4 depressing bumps on the surface, and a “dense” or slightly loosely looking skin.

Grade 2, or intermediate: There is a dent in between five and nine, the appearance of "cottage cheese", and the skin appears to be moderately firm.

Grade 3, or harder: There is a "mattress" look, with 10 or more deep pressures, and the skin is very tight.

Causes

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but it appears to be caused by contact between the tissues connected to the dermatological layer below the skin, and to the fat layer beneath it.

In women, fat cells and connective tissue are arranged upward.

When fat cells form on the skin layer, this gives the appearance of cellulite.

For men, the tissue has a criss-cross structure, which may explain why cellulite is less likely than for women.

Other factors seem to be associated with the possibility of cellulite.

Hormonal characteristics and age

Hormones probably play a key role in the development of cellulite. Estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormone, and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process.

Another theory is that as estrogen in women decreases in menopause, blood flow to the connective tissue also decreases.

Low circulation means less oxygen in the area, which leads to lower collagen production. Fat cells also increase a Reliable Source as estrogen levels decrease.

These factors combine to make oil deposits more visible. As subcutaneous fat results in weakened connective tissue, a typical dimpling effect becomes the result.

Aging also causes the skin to become thinner, thinner, and more prone to cracking. This increases the chances of cellulite growth.

Genetic factors

Certain genes are needed to develop cellulite. Genetic factors may be linked to a person's metabolic rate, subcutaneous fat distribution, race, and blood circulation levels. This can affect the chance of cellulite growth.

Elements of diet and lifestyle

Cellulite is not caused by "toxins," although a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk.

Exercise and diet can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

People who eat a lot of fat, carbohydrates, and salt and very little fiber are more likely to have high cellulite levels.

It may also be more common in smokers, those who do not exercise, and those who sit or stand in one place for long periods of time.

Wearing stretch-down underwear can reduce blood flow, and this may contribute to cellulite formation.

Cellulite is more common in people who are overweight, but younger and stronger people can have it. It is very likely to occur after 25 years, but it may affect young people, including teenagers.

Treatment and removal

There are many recommended treatments for cellulite removal, but none have been confirmed by scientific research.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has reviewed a number of effective ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite by breaking down the connective tissue under the skin.

Acoustic wave therapy uses a handheld device to transmit sound waves. It may work, but it may take a few minutes.

Laser treatment can improve the appearance of cellulite for a year or more. It involves inserting a very small laser probe under the skin.

The laser is then dislocated, tearing the tissue. This can also thicken the skin by increasing collagen production. Strong skin can reduce the appearance of cellulite below.

Submission involves a dermatologist inserting a needle under the skin to separate the connective tissue bands. The results could last for 2 years or more, says AAD.

Vacuum extraction with the help of vacuum cutting belts using a device containing small blades. As it cuts the connecting straps, the underlying tissue rises to fill the gap under the skin, removing the appearance of cellulite. This may take up to 3 years, but the data for your success is limited.

Carboxytherapy involves the application of carbon dioxide gas under the skin. Side effects include abrasions and discomfort after the procedure, but some cellulite may disappear.

Endermologie involves deep massage with a vacuum-like machine that lifts the skin. The United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it as safe, but little evidence of its effectiveness, the AAD said.

Many times acoustic wave therapy can help treat cellulite.

Treatment to reduce Ionithermie cellulite involves covering the affected area with a special mortar or clay, and wrapping it in plastic before applying electrical energy. It is not proven to be effective.

Radiotherapy aims to reduce cellulite by burning it, but any side effects are temporary.

Laser-assisted liposuction removes excess fat, but this may make the condition worse. Studies have not shown that it is effective in reducing cellulite.

Ultrasonic liposculpting targets and destroys oils, but again, research does not prove to be effective.

Strategies AAD does not recommend include cryolipolysis, ointment, mesotherapy, which involves injecting a mixture of substances under the skin.

Medicines and creams

Some medications and creams are recommended because they work on fatty tissue.

Caffeine dehydrates the body, making it invisible. This needs daily use. Various cellulite caffeine creams are available for purchase online.

Other solutions

Alternative or complementary therapies include caffeine, grape seed extract, or gingko biloba. These agents have been used topically, orally, and by injection, but none of them have proven to be effective.

Some people wear pressure clothing to reduce the appearance of cellulite. These layers try to compress the blood vessels and increase blood and lymph flow to reduce visible cellulite. Pressure socks and other clothing can be purchased online.
