What Is Breast Tenderness?

The heaviness of breasts with tingling sensation is depicted as breast tenderness. On being touched, pressed, or palpated, the swollen breast causes immense pain. When running or walking also, the breast causes tremendous pain, revealing tenderness of the breast. Breast tenderness is not gender-specific as it affects both the males and the females with tingling pain during puberty or hormonal fluctuations.
But the ratio of the women exceeds that of the men, susceptible to such condition, as hormonal changes take place in women much faster in comparison with their male counterparts. Breast tenderness, caused due to hormonal fluctuations, can be tolerated if its occurrence is temporary, but it has got to become a big complication provided it persists for long, turning into a chronic condition. Chronic tenderness in the breast needs medical attention as it may be the outcome of malignant disease.
Symptoms of Breast Tenderness
Breast tenderness is characterized by the high sensitivity of the breast due to swelling on it. It causes inflammatory pain to be touched or palpated with fingers. It is often compared with a tingling sensation as well, as it triggers a stinging or prickling when treated, even if mildly, with fingers. Breast tenderness occurs when moving with the loose bra or without a bra as it’s shaking randomly causes jerk over it, tormenting the women extensively with breast sore.
If breast soreness is the result of breast cancer, it may be symptomized by cystic lumps, relentless pain, and discharge as well. It is a rare condition but can affect anyone else. If such symptoms are noticed over the painful breast, bring it to the doctor’s notice causing any delay on your part.
Breast Tenderness Causes
Following are a few common causes of breast tenderness Enlargement of Breast
Swelling on the breast is one of the common causes of breast tenderness, seen mostly in pregnant women. Caused due to hormonal changes in the body, it causes breast even of the teenagers (during their puberty) to swell to a large extent, but pregnant women are prone to this condition much more. Abrupt swelling on the breast causes a strain within its smaller tissues, causing thereby pain in the breast of pregnant women, a critical condition known as breast tenderness.
Breast Infection-
Also known as mastitis, it is another cause of breast tenderness, affecting mostly the lactating women. Breast infection is caused due to blockage in the milk ducts of female breasts. Such a condition allows bacteria to encroach into the small breast-tissues and trigger thereon breast infection, a painful condition of the breast, identified as breast tenderness.

Unexpressed Breast Milk-
Largely produced milk in a lactating woman’s breast exerts pressure within the breast-tissues and causes soreness or tenderness in the breast. If breast-milk is expressed properly, then the pain subsides naturally, providing prompt respite from tormenting pain in the breast. The women suffering from breast tenderness due to such conditions should feed breast-milk to their baby or compress their sore breast with warm water to remove excessively-stored milk of their engorged breast.
Disordered Levels of Hormone-
Affecting mostly the women during their menopause and pregnancy, such condition also is one of the common causes of breast tenderness. Due to hormonal fluctuations, the breast starts forming milk ducts within it for the sake of an unborn baby, being nurtured in a woman’s womb. And its effect is very natural to be seen in female breast enlarging extensively and causing thereby breast tenderness.
Misbalanced Estrogen-
Estrogen is a steroid hormone produced in the female ovary. Any kind of such randomization of hormone in the female body causes the breast to swell and increases its sensitivity, which makes it susceptible to pain or tenderness of the breast.
Premenstrual Period & Menstruation Cycle- During this period, a female body undergoes hormonal changes that are one of the common causes of painful breast, characterized by swelling and pain.
Breast Cancer-
It is a dreaded disease, malignant in nature, which also causes persisting tenderness in woman’s breasts. If pain in the breast is persistent and not going-off, despite massage or ice-pack therapy, you should bring it to a doctor’s notice as its chances of being malignant in nature cannot be ruled out. Affecting the inner lining of the milk ducts (lobules), breast cancer causes the respective region to expand extensively. Such a condition of the breast is recognized as breast tenderness.
Breast cancer can’t be detected easily as it matches symptomatically, by its prima-facie observation, with other causes of breast tenderness, characterized by pain, swelling, and tingling. It is the lumpy nodes on the breast, which usually is taken as a sign of breast cancer. A few symptoms, such as discharge from nipples, ridges on the breast, breast-deformation, blood-oozing, and lumps in the breast, are the natural signs of breast cancer.
Treatment of Breast Tenderness

Express Excessive Breast Milk-
If tenderness in the breast is the outcome of your unexpressed milk, you should remove the excess milk from the breast either by offering breast-milk to your baby or taking a warm shower. The reduction of the breast itself reduces tenderness, providing great respite from persisting soreness and tingling pain on the breast.
Place Ice Pack- The ice-pack (crushed ice kept in a thing bag) also provides prompt relief from persisting inflammation and pain to be felt when palpating the engorged delicate breast.
Mild Massage-
If breast tenderness is caused during pregnancy, then mild massage is to provide relief. The massage causes the blood circulation in the breast to move that naturally reduces persisting pain and tingling sensation.
Wear Soft Comfy Bra-
The women suffering from breast tenderness should neither wear a tight bra nor loose bra. A soft padded comfy bra should be worn to avoid breast pain to be caused due either to its tight strips or loose strips. The tight strips of bra exert pressure on the breast, while loose strips allow the painful breast to shake hither-thither and tormenting the woman with pain.
Vitamin–
Add vitamin A and E enriched consumables in your diets to increase natural resisting power and check all the breast tenderness causes.
Consume Soy Products-
Consume plenty of soy-rich products, such as soy milk, soybeans, soy burgers, etc. Soy prevents the contrary effects of estrogen and thus provides relief from tenderness in the breast.
Herbal Tea-
Drink herbal tea as it flushes out noxious toxins from the body naturally and keeps all types of breast pain at bay.
Precautionary Measures
Reduce Salt- Salt causes water retention in the body. It is the retention of water in the female breast, which causes it to get enlarged during hormonal fluctuations and cause thereby pain and burning sensation in the breast.
Avoid Caffeine- The caffeine happens to be rich in methylxanthine, a harmful substance, stimulating female breast and affecting it pain or tenderness. So if you are addict to tea, coffee, soda, or chocolates, reduce its intakes as a part of precautionary steps. Breast tenderness causes not only a physical complication but mental trauma as well.
