A blockchain is a public, digital record of transactions, which records information in such a way as to be hard to hack or alter. A blockchain is basically a digital ledger of transactions that is replicated and distributed throughout an entire network of computer systems in the blockchain. It uses cryptography to enable every participant in a distributed network of computers to manipulate a digital ledger of transactions securely, without requiring a central authority. Once a block of data is recorded in a blockchain ledger, it is extremely hard to alter or delete.
Because of this verification process, and the encryption that this distributed ledger uses, the blockchain is extremely secure, creating a record that is nearly unchangeable. Since every transaction has to be confirmed by the majority of network nodes and recorded on a distributed ledger, there is no chance for the information to be manipulated or altered. A majority of the nodes must validate and confirm the legitimacy of new data before the new block can be added to the blockchain ledger.
Each block can only store so much information, which is why new blocks are constantly added to the blockchain, creating a chain. Before a new block can be added to an existing blockchain, it has to have its authenticity verified through a computational process called verification, or consensus. Each node has its own copy of the chain, and the network needs to approve each newly mined block, using algorithms, in order to keep the chain up-to-date, trusted, and verified.

Blockchain is perfect to provide this type of information, as blockchain provides instant, shared, and fully transparent information stored in an immutable ledger, accessible by permission members of the network only.
The key point to understand here is that the Bitcoin network uses blockchain only as a means of recording payment records transparently, but in theory, blockchains could be used to immutably record any amount of data points. Every computer has access to this distributed ledger, and as new transactions are added to a receipt or ledger, these are verified by computers on the network. Blockchain technology could be used to build an ongoing, public, transparent, ledger system to collect data about sales, monitor digital usage, and pay creators of content, like wireless users or musicians.
