 Causes of Bhopal incident

The Bhopal gas tragedy was a result of a combination of technical, operational, and safety lapses. The primary factors contributing to the disaster were inadequate safety measures, storage of hazardous chemicals, design flaws, poor maintenance, lack of safety training, inadequate emergency preparedness, failure of warning systems, communication breakdown, and cost-cutting measures.

 

The Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) plant in Bhopal lacked adequate safety measures and systems, with malfunctioning or poorly maintained safety equipment. The plant also stored large quantities of hazardous chemicals, including methyl isocyanate (MIC), which increased the risk of a catastrophic incident. The design flaws in the plant's safety systems did not adequately consider the potential for runaway reactions or gas release.
