A Canadian-American professor of physical education, James Naismith was attempting to liven up his gym class on a dreary December 1891 at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts . In order to keep his students busy and at the right level of fitness throughout the long New England winters, he looked for a physically demanding indoor game. Having rejected other concepts as too violent or unfit for gymnasiums enclosed by walls, he created a brand-new game in which participants transfer the ball to one another and attempt to earn points by putting it into a wall-mounted basket. Olympic ParalympicThe peach baskets were in use until 1906, when metal hoops with backboards eventually took their place. Soon after, something else changed, causing the ball to just go through. A player's team scored a point each time he or she put the ball in the basket. The winner of the game was the team with the most points. Originally, the baskets were fastened to the mezzanine balcony of the court, but this became unfeasible when onlookers started to obstruct shots.
