Search Barcode Reader is a type of input device which is used to scan and read the barcode attached to an object or item.
Search Barcode Reader is also known as Barcode Scanner or Point-of-sale (POS). It scans and reads barcodes using a laser.
In other words, “Barcode reader is an optical scanner which reads the barcode present in any object or item and decodes the information present in it.”
In simple words, It is a scanner which is used to detect the information hidden in barcode. In a barcode, information about the price of an item or item, its expiry date, product number, and when that item was made etc. is hidden.
We can scan the barcode by holding the search barcode reader in our hands. A search barcode reader consists of a scanner, a decoder and a cable.
It captures barcodes as numbers or letters. After this, the captured data is sent to the computer so that the software application present in the computer can understand that data.
An interface device called a serial port, keyboard port, or wedge is used to connect a barcode reader to a computer.
Barcode reader is used to find out product information. A type of barcode is used in almost all types of products in which the information about the product is hidden.
At present, advanced and modern mobile phones are available which are capable of working as barcode readers. These scan barcodes through mobile phone apps and collect information about things.
Search We can also call barcode reader, an electronic scanning machine which is able to scan only barcode info information.
Search Barcode reader was invented by George J Laurer in 1971.

1- Pen Wand
Pen Wand is the simplest type of barcode reader and its price is also very low. Pen Wand is a cheap search barcode reader, and it is also more durable due to which it lasts for a long time.
The Pen Wand remains in direct contact with the barcode. In this, to scan the barcode, it is kept at a fixed angle.
2- Slot Scanner
In slot scanner, the user scans the barcode through his hands. In simple words, Slot scanner is a device which the user holds in his hands and scans the barcode. In this, hands have to be kept stable to scan things. “The code will not scan if the user does not keep his hands steady.”
This search barcode reader is used to scan identification cards (ID) and swipe cards.
3- CCD Scanner
The full name of CCD is “Charge Coupled Device”. There are many LED lights installed in the CCD Scanner, with the help of these LEDs the barcode is scanned. Therefore, it is also called LED scanner.
To scan the barcode through a CCD scanner, we should be 3 cm to 10 cm away from the barcode, otherwise it will not work.
This is a scanner which is used in retail sales. CCD scanners are better than pen wands which are able to scan things better.
The shape of this scanner is like a gun which the user can easily hold in his hands.
4- Image Scanner
Image scanner is also called camera reader. Image scanner contains a small camera that helps in capturing or scanning images. This scanner can also scan barcodes remotely.
Image Scanner contains a digital imaging processor that reads barcodes. It can be used to read barcodes up to 9 inches.
5- Laser Scanner
Laser scanners use mirrors or lenses to scan barcodes. This scanner has a high range and can scan objects up to 24 inches away.
We can scan things by holding this scanner in our hands and can also scan things by keeping it at a stable place. It can read barcodes up to 30 feet away.
6- 2D Scanner
It is used to scan 2D barcode and QR code.
7- Bluetooth Scanner
This is a wireless scanner in which Bluetooth technology is used. In this the barcode is scanned with the help of Bluetooth.
8- WI-FI Scanner
Through this, WIFI is required to scan the barcode. It doesn't work without WIFI.
