For decades, the medical profession has observed that back pain is common in society. The most famous victims of chronic back pain are our seniors. Uncomfortable back pain causes anxiety and can also interfere with people's regular activities, including their work schedule and time to play with family. Back pain can be the most difficult and frustrating type of pain to treat for both patients and their doctors.
Here are some of the common causes of back pain:
1. Muscle strains are considered the most common.
2. A ruptured intervertebral disc, otherwise known as a herniated disc, can lead to back pain
3. Improper posture, heavy lifting, and repetitive motions can also cause back pain.
4. In the aging phase, the spinal cord is likely to narrow, which can cause back pain. This is known as spinal stenosis.
5. A person suffering from arthritis in the lumbar region commonly suffers from back pain.
6. As a result of generative changes, adjacent vertebrae in the spinal cord can become unstable and begin to slip, resulting in back pain. This is called spondylolisthesis.
7. Sometimes psychological problems such as fear, anxiety, and depression can add to the discomfort and pain.
Types and treatment of back pain:
It can be divided into two categories.
1. Acute or short-term pain – Also known as low back pain, the pain is likely caused by some sort of trauma to the lower back. Sports or vehicle injuries could be the main cause of this unwanted back pain.
2. Chronic back pain: If back pain persists for more than three months, it is considered chronic.
Here are some interesting facts about back pain:
* Between 1997 and 2001, the average loss of work due to back injury was 45.
* It is known that about 30 to 40 percent of all workplace absences are due to back pain.
* Back strain accounts for 25% of all WCB claims.
* Between 1997 and 2001, WCB received 63,900 requests for back strain from men and 26,800 requests for back strain from women.
* More than two-thirds of the stress on the back is due to lifting and other stresses such as pulling and pushing.
* Lower back pain accounts for two-thirds of all back pain-related cases.
Victims should consult a doctor if their back pain persists for more than 72 hours. Surgery is not a great solution at all times, sometimes painkillers will relieve the pain, and then consuming anti-inflammatory drugs. Some exercises are also recommended to strengthen muscles and overcome back pain. But they should be practiced in the presence of a professional, otherwise, they could worsen the situation if practiced in the wrong way.
If the pain spreads to the legs, numbness of the legs, the area of the anus, and the foot, and develops nausea, fever, stomach pain, and vomiting accompanied by back pain, it is necessary to report it to the doctor immediately.
The key to properly treating back pain is to understand the cause and take preventative and proactive measures to eliminate the pain. Remember that pain is always a sign that something else is wrong, and if it is continually ignored, it can lead to more serious damage.
