ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science focused on creating intelligent machines that work and react like humans. AI has become a hot topic since the mass emergence of smart technology, but the concept has actually been around for centuries.
The history of AI traces all the way back to ancient Greek philosophy of developing a thinking machine. People had dreams of creating machines that could think and make decisions on their own. Moving forward to the modern age, Alan Turing, an English mathematician, developed the Turing Test in 1950. He proposed a way that a machine could be judged to be “thinking”. His theory became the foundation of modern AI research.
In 1956, scientists held the first artificial intelligence conference at Dartmouth. Here, they discussed AI and its implications in society. John McCarthy, one of the most influential figures in AI, coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” as we know it today and declared it as the new discipline of computer science.
In the following decade, AI began to take on different forms. The first computer programs were developed that could successfully recognize and respond to human voice. This was followed by the development of the first computer vision programs. In addition, AI researcher Marvin Minsky proposed the idea of machines that could think and learn on their own.
During the 1970s, AI research and development had their own version of the “summer of love”. Increased funding gave researchers the opportunity to test the boundaries of AI. One of the main projects that emerged was an AI program called DENDRAL. This was an AI program that studied and identified organic molecules.
At the same time, the term “expert system” was created, referring to computer programs that work like a knowledgeable human knowledgeable in a specific field. AI also began to be seen as a potential aid to people in everyday life.
The 1980s saw a pause in the development of AI. Many researchers believed that the initial promises of AI had been exaggerated and that the technology was fundamentally limited by its hardware.
It wasn’t until the decade of the 1990s that AI technology began to be widely adopted. This is due to a combination of factors including improved hardware, better algorithms, and the internet. One of the most notable projects that came out of this period was Deep Blue, the AI chess champion.
In the years since then, AI has continued to evolve and become more powerful. Popular applications of AI today include machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and artificial neural networks (ANN).
AI is now being used in almost every aspect of our lives, from autonomous cars to robotics to virtual assistants. Companies like Google and IBM have invested heavily in AI and are pushing the technology beyond its current limits.
AI will continue to evolve over time, and its impact on society is likely to only grow. AI will open new opportunities in the world and make people’s lives easier and more efficient.
