What is aerobic respiration?

Respiratory system plays very important role in all living organism. Respiration is a chemical process that supply the energy for muscle contraction, growth etc...by absorbing and release of a lot of molecules and electrons. Also, respiration involves in various stages. In these stages, release of gases, electrons etc... will be taken place. There are two type of respiration. 1) Aerobic respiration

                                                           2) Anaerobic respiration. 

In this article, let's see about aerobic respiration and its stages in brief. 

 Difference between aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration:

Aerobic respiration is a chemical process in which oxygen plays an important role, whereas anaerobic respiration takes place without oxygen. The final product of aerobic respiration is oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. Also,  the final product of anaerobic respiration is alcohol. Comparatively, aerobic respiration releases more energy by the process. Example of aerobic is plants and animals. And example of anaerobic respiration is Prokaryotes (bacteria, yeast). 

 

What is Aerobic respiration? 

Aerobic respiration releases energy by breaking down the food substance in the presence of oxygen. Itnis represented by the simple equation, where glucose+ oxygen gives carbon dioxide and water, with release of energy. Glucose is broken down by the oxygen to release the water and carbon dioxide. The released energy ATP is stored in the body for later use. We all know, human body is made up of cells. The Cell has mitochondria, which stores ATP and plays a major role as powerhouse of the cell. So, the oxygen from the air, inhaled through ventilation system. Whereas plants gets oxygen with the help of stomata. Moreover, plants undergoes two process, one is respiration and another one is photosynthesis. Respiration in nighttime and photosynthesis in daytime. Photosynthesis helps plants to prepare the food, whereas respiration helps them to release energy from it. But the release of energy is lighter than animals. 

 

     Glucose+ oxygen →  carbon dioxide+water+energy.(ATP) 

 

Four stages of aerobic respiration:

Aerobic respiration undergoes through four stages, 

     1) Glycolysis

2)Transition Reaction

3) Krebs cycle

4) Electron transport chain. 

 

Glycolysis  is a process, the conversion of glucose into Pyruvate takes place. Pyruvate is six membered rings which helps in breaking down carbohydrate into sugars. This process takes place in both aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. The main role of glycolysis is producing pyruvate, which undergoes various process. 

Pyruvate undergoes aerobic respiration or fermentation. Pyruvate oxidation takes place and thus results in release of various energies. This transition reaction also plays a role as a preparatory step for Krebs cycle. So, Krebs cycle is also called as citric acid cycle. The products from last process undergoes with addition of oxygen, and then it gives oxaloacetic acid. Krebs cycle results with the end products with two ATP and other molecules. Where the molecules like NADH and FADH2 undergoes electron transport system. 

 

Conclusion:

After a long process of respiration, we get energy for our body. This concludes that, respiration is not breathing, it involves in producing energy. Thus, respiration process plays an important role in both plants and animals
