What is a Smart Home?
A smart home is one that has internet-connected appliances that can be programmed and managed from a computer or smartphone. A smart house, for instance, allows remote control of numerous features, including windows, doors, security, lighting, temperature, and multimedia.
The most common smart devices include:

  • Lighting
  • Heating
  • Power controls (switches and smart plugs)
  • Energy monitors
  • Security (locks and cameras)
  • Home entertainment systems
    All you need is a smart phone, a reliable internet connection and some smart devices, and you can start to automate tasks and use your voice to control your home, even when you are not there.

What does a Smart Homes do?
Smart houses monitor many parts of the house and offer intelligent, programmable controls. They also use home automation technologies to give owners feedback and information. A smart refrigerator might be able to categorize its contents, make menu recommendations, offer healthier substitutes, and place replacement orders when food runs out. Even when the owner is not home, smart gadgets may take care of watering the plants and feeding the cat.
Smart technologies present chances to enhance our quality of life and work while simultaneously increasing energy efficiency. Using your smart phone, you can check who's at the front door, shut the windows, adjust the lighting and curtains, and keep an eye on how much energy your house is producing and consuming from anywhere in the world.

7. Customisation – Smart devices can be programmed to the home owners preferences so that a range of settings can be activated by a single tap on a phone.
8. Intelligent controls – As well as being able to control devices with your voice, some devices can be triggered by specific conditions, avoiding the need for user input. For example, the amount of sunlight can effect a plant or lawn watering schedule.
9. Well being – Adding cameras, alert buttons and communication technologies can make homes safer for elderly people and providing support easier for others.

How does a Smart Home Work?
Dedicated wiring was once necessary for smart houses, but these days everything is wireless, and the majority of smart devices can be connected to WiFi immediately.
Z Wave and Zig bee were the most widely used protocols until recently, but with the rise of WiFi and cloud computing power, smart technology is now accessible to a wider audience and may be used for voice control and other functions.

With businesses like Apple, Google, Nanoleaf, and Eve, Thread is beginning to acquire traction even though it isn't nearly a household brand yet. The technology of Thread doesn't depend on WiFi or a home internet connection. It offers a dedicated mesh network of its own. Thus, each Thread enabled device functions as a mini hub rather than all devices connecting to a single access point.
Since Thread uses the more efficient IEEE 802.15.4 MAC or Phy protocol than WiFi, it consumes less power while providing a variety of advantages such as faster reaction times, more dependability, and better security.
An increasing number of products, such as the Eve Energy, Eve Aqua, Google Nest Hub Max, and Apple Home pod Mini, have Thread capabilities.
Wifi, Bluetooth, Z Wave, and Zig bee have all attempted and failed to take over as the main smart home protocols. However, none have acquired sufficient traction or provided sufficient flexibility to prevail; here is where Matter enters the picture.
Matter is a open source connectivity standard that links Thread, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet so that all of your devices may talk to each other locally without the use of a cloud. It was developed by more than 400 firms. The Connectivity Standards Alliance, formerly the Zig bee Alliance, is in charge of coordinating Matter. Hundreds of other tech companies, including Amazon, Apple, Google / Nest, Samsung,  Wyze,  iRobot, Signify (Philips Hue), and Eco bee, are part of this alliance. In the process of making all of our homes smarter, hopefully it will put an end to the "protocol wars" that have hampered smart home interoperability and enhance everyone's usability and accessibility.
