What IPL Auctions tell us about life

Only in sport does your class or community not matter. Only in sport 'little' people make big money. So, Only with sportsperson do wealth and fame seem honestly acquired. This is why the outcome of the recently concluded indian premier league auction was so well received.

Trasperancy

                    The bidding calls in IPL are based on players 'past performances' but very often on just dazzling promise. Sometimes the choice can go wrong, when Jaydev Unadkat went for a record Rs 11.5Cr. in 2018, the judgement was based on potential. This year his price was just Rs 1.6Cr and it was determined by performance.

Open-mindedness

                                      It doesn't matter either from which community, or class, a player comes. One can hardly make that claim in any other activity with a straight face in anywhere in the world. In this year's IPL pick we have Shubham Dubey and Avesh Khan who went for rather grand sums of Rs5.8Cr and Rs10cr respectively.

Upward mobility

                                    Nor do initial price tags count for much. When Sameer Rizvi entered the fray, his base price was only Rs20 lakh, but he was finally picked up for Rs8.4Cr. Class and status obviously cut no ice when selectors make their judgement.

Sportsmanship

                         This is why the term "gamesmanship" is pejorative and suggest doctoring an outcome, whereas "sportsmanship" is about honesty, rules, and transparency.

Professionalism

                           In the era of games we also had the distinction between "Gentlemen" and "Professionals" in english cricket. In the lords pavallion there were different dressing room for "Gentlemen" where professionals could not change. This practice lasted till 1963. 

Honest commentry 

                                        Cheating and gamesmanship do not work well in sports as they might in other professions. Here the outcome is transparent and it's out there for all to see. This is why nobody really grumbles when a sportsperson hits the jackpot and does well.
