Recently, NASA successfully collected the largest soil sample ever obtained from the asteroid Bennu.

A NASA space capsule successfully obtained a 250-gram soil sample from an asteroid, traveling a distance of 6 billion kilometers before landing in the Utah desert. Japan's previous space missions also collected soil samples from the asteroid twice but in smaller quantities.

While scientists may disagree on the age of the universe, they generally believe that about five billion years ago, a huge cloud of gas and dust collided as a result of gravitational collapse. In the center of this cloud was the sun, rich in gas.

The samples will be sent Monday to a new laboratory at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The building already houses nearly 400 kg (842 lb.) of lunar rocks collected by Apollo astronauts more than half a century ago.

Scientists estimated that the capsule contains at least a cup of remains from the carbon-rich asteroid known as Bennu, but they won't know for sure until the container is opened.

Experts say the Bennu soil sample can provide important information about the formation of the world, which is why the acquisition of this soil is considered a great success.

Japan was the only other country to recover asteroid samples before the recent OSIRIS-REx mission.

The mission's lead scientist, Dante Lauretta of the University of Arizona, will accompany the samples to Texas. He expressed that the opening of the container in Houston in one or two days will be a crucial moment since it is not yet known how much will fit in the container.

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft collected the specimen three years before Bennu, a small asteroid discovered in 1999. Bennu is considered a "near-Earth object" as it passes relatively close to our planet every six years. The asteroid is believed to be made up of a loose collection of rocks and measures 500 meters (1,600 feet) across, making it slightly wider than the Empire State Building. It is tall but small compared to the Chicxulub asteroid, which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. When it collided with Earth about 66 million years ago.
