What Happens If I Miss My Flight?

It is quite stressful when you find out that you have missed your flight. No matter whether you missed your flight due to traffic, long security lines, or a delay on your connecting flight, finding out you cannot board your flight can be quite chaotic. So what happens if I miss my flight?

The first thing you are left with after missing your flight is to wait for the next plane to board. You need to immediately check with the Airline representative and inform them that you have missed your flight. Ask them for the available rebooking option. This is important to do because at that moment, this is the most viable recourse available for you. Here is what you need to do in case of a missed flight:

Reach Out to the Airline

When you are certain you will miss your next flight, contact the airline as soon as possible. The sooner you inform the airline, the better your chances of getting help.

After missing a flight, if you are still at the airport, head straight to the airline’s service desk. Explain them, your reason for missing the flight. And based on the availability, the airline will give you the option to rebook your next flight. Each airline has its own policies for rebooking. If you are lucky enough, you may be able to book your flight without paying extra charges.

Generally, if the airline is at fault, it will not charge you any money if the fault is from the Airline’s side. However, if you missed the flight due to your mistake, you will have to pay extra charges.

The “Flat Tire Rule”

The next available option is to use the “flat tire rule”. Though it is not an official policy, some airlines may still apply it. For instance, if you missed a flight because you were stuck in a traffic jam or your car’s tyre got punctured, you can request rebooking with the airline's executive. But always keep in mind that rebooking under this rule totally depends on your luck; it is not guaranteed.

Be Polite and Flexible

The first thing that comes to mind in a situation of what happens if I miss my flight is panic. However, you should not panic in this situation. Instead, you must ask for available rebooking options calmly. If you calmly explain your citation to the airline's executive and respectfully ask for available rebooking options, it can increase your chance of getting the next flight. Additionally, if you are flexible with available options, timing, and seating, it also helps.
