What Happened to the girl who" Melted in the Couch" for 12 Years

The Tragic Case of Lacey Fletcher: The Body On The Couch

In April 2022, a horrific and tragic story made headlines in the United States. It quickly gained international attention and shocked people all over the world. The body on the couch in this instance is Lacey Ellen Fletcher.

Although not much is known about Lacey Ellen Fletcher, we do know that she was born and raised in the tiny Louisianan hamlet of Slaughter, which has just 882 residents as of the US Census Bureau's 2020 count.

The only child known to have been born to Sheila and Clay Fletcher was Lacey. Sheila and Clay were well respected members of the neighbourhood who often attended church. About 27 years ago, the Fletchers moved into their tidy two-story house on a gravel cul-de-sac, where nine-year-old Lacey began to make friends with kids from the nearby neighbourhood.

As a teen, Lacey attended the Brownsville Baptist Academy in Louisiana. She was featured on the school’s volleyball team and was said to enjoy watching Disney films. Lacey was last seen by her school friends during the 9th grade.

In a 1997–98 team photo, Lacey could be seen beaming as she posed alongside her classmates. In her yearbook photo, she could be seen smiling endearingly. From anyone looking at this photograph, it would appear that Lacey was a normal and happy teen; however what would come to be of Lacey’s story, was far from this.

Lacey had been homeschooled since high school, suffered social anxiety as a teenager, and had a severe case of Asperger’s, Mr D’Aquila said.

"Sickening"

On January 3, at her parents' usually tidy single-family home in Slaughter, Lacey's malnourished body was found mostly naked, sitting erect, and partially buried in a hole in a couch covered from head to toe in pee, liquid faeces, maggots, and insect bites. It was a gruesome scene.

Deep within the couch, where her long-suffering body had worn through the cushion and upholstery, her feet were crossed underneath her. She had spent at least 12 years confined to the sofa, according to Dr. Ewell Bickham III.

It has also been alleged that Lacey had faeces pushed into her chest, abdomen, and face. She was under 100 pounds, with matted, twisted, and maggot-filled hair.

Despite having autism, people remembered Lacey Fletcher as being involved in sports. Although her degeneration began much earlier, she died at the age of 36. Since her autism had started to impair her, Lacey was unable to carry out her daily activities. She spent ten years just sitting on their living room couch. She remained still. Does that make sense, then? How did she go take a shower or use the lavatory? This is the point at which intentional killing becomes negligence.

I have been a sheriff for six years, and I have had a lot of things happen here in East Feliciana Parish, but this type of scene, this is by far the worst" said Sheriff Jeffery Travis.

Dr. Ewell Dewitt Bickham III, the coroner for East Feliciana Parish, declared the death to be a homicide and called the situation "sickening".

"I've witnessed some terrible things in my life, but nothing like this," he remarked. "In the kitchen were the parents. They have no explanation for this. I spent a week crying and not being able to eat"

Steven Moore, the attorney for Clay and Sheila Fletcher, stated that the couple does not wish to "relive the pain of losing a child through the media".

"Over the years, they have experienced numerous heartaches," he remarked. People who have experienced child loss are aware of this.

The couple claimed that Sheila Fletcher would frequently wipe her daughter's sores and that Lacey would discharge herself on the couch or a towel that was placed close by.

According to Mr. D'Aquilla, the Fletchers stated in 2011 or 2012 that Lacey was averse to leaving the house and had never before ever voiced any complaints about remaining within.

A grand jury has accused her parents, Clay and Sheila Fletcher, with second-degree murder after District Attorney Sam D'Aquilla claimed that they had planned to kill her.

"We don't treat animals that way or neglect them," he declared. You must take your animal to the veterinarian if it is in that condition.

"Get assistance if you are unable to provide the care".We want people to understand that providing care for someone else requires attention.

It's critical that neighbours and the community watch out for one another. We hope that this doesn't occur once more.
