If you're just trying to plant trees to shade your garden, you'll probably want something that grows very quickly and provides plenty of shade. With the variety of tree species available, you will have no problem finding a variety that will grow extremely fast and provide all the shade your garden needs to survive. There are also many things you can do to speed up tree growth.
In general, trees fall into two categories: long-lived and short-lived. If you're just looking for some temporary shade for your garden, you should stick with a short-lived tree. But if you plan to keep it for years, bet on a long-lived tree.
If you're going for a short-lived plant, you're probably looking for something that grows quickly. This means that the root system will be particularly aggressive, so do not place it near septic tanks or other deep-rooted plants. If the roots have enough room to grow, they will shoot out extremely quickly and your tree will take off in growth. Your placement should also be based on the tree's relative position to the area you want to shade. For maximum shading, you should keep it on the west or south side.
Good soil preparation for shade trees can be the best way to increase the rate of plant growth. The bigger the hole you dig for the root ball, the better. Also, when you dig the soil out of the hole, you should work it well before replacing it. This will allow the roots to penetrate the soil better. If you mix all the fertilizers and nutrients into the soil before changing it, you will end up with an excellent tree. Also try using organic materials as mulch. Bark and any branches or twigs will do well for this and encourage rapid growth.
When you buy your shade tree, it will usually come with the root ball wrapped and in a bag. It can also be grown in a container or simply bare-rooted. If you get a bagged tree, you should plant it anywhere between fall and early spring. Container-grown trees are suitable for planting at almost any time of the year. If the tree has only bare roots, then any time in winter and early spring is the ideal planting time. If you buy a tree that has been grown in a container, make sure the roots are not pulled by the container. This usually causes the roots to go in circles underground after planting. After you buy the tree and before you plant it, remember to keep adding moisture to it.
The ideal planting process would involve digging into the ground at the correct depth and replacing the soil without too much compaction. Immediately after planting, you should first water the tree before applying a layer of mulch. You should always use organic mulch and have a 2 or 3 inch layer of it at the base of your tree.
You should always use nitrogen fertilizer during the first segment of the tree's life. Simply follow the directions on the label to find out exactly how much to apply and when. Never apply too much fertilizer while the tree is young. You should usually wait until it has been established for about a year. The fertilizer you add should be well watered.
