What does period blood color says about our health?

You probably know that menstrual cycle is a normal phenomenon occurs in women life. So we must be aware of the process.

To know what the change in period blood color means, we should know about the menstrual cycle process. 

 

What is the Menstrual cycle or Menstruation?

A menstrual cycle is a cyclic event that rhythmically takes place during the reproductive life of a women life.

Usually, the Menstrual cycle starts at the age of 12-15 years which makes the onset of puberty. The commencement of the menstrual cycle is called MENARCHE.

The menstrual cycle ceases at the age of 45-50 years, which is called MENOPAUSE. The cycle varies from 21-36 days for individuals with a length of 28 days.

The period blood is not completely made up of blood; it is a mixture of blood, fluid, and lining cells or debris of the uterus.

 

Stages or Phases of Menstrual cycle

A women's Menstrual cycle is divided into four stage

  1.  Menstrual phase: In this phase where the period lasts 3-5days. It may also cause cramps, tender breasts, bloating, mood swings, pain in the lower back.
  2. The follicular phase starts on the first day of the period and ends on the day you ovulate. The average length is 16 days.
  3. Ovulation phase: It starts when your ovary releases a mature egg. It happens around the day of 14 if you have a 28 days cycle.
  4. Luteal or secretive phase: In this phase, there will be a release of hormones that keeps the uterine lining thick and ready for a fertilized egg to implant. The average length is 14 days.

Do you know that the color of the period blood can tell you if your body is functioning properly or not? Most of the women are clueless about this. So we can discuss what does the period blood color says about our health.

 

Colors of period blood

1. PINKISH COLOR

If your period blood color is pinkish colored, it may signify a low estrogen level.

It is mostly seen in Athletes who playing sports (especially running) may cause the estrogen level to drop. Still, it's something to watch out for because some studies show that low estrogen level has a connection with osteoporosis later in life.

Pinkish color also indicates that the individual works out a lot. Studies have shown that heavy exercise reduces the estrogen level and can eventually muddle with your period. If your period blood is consistently pink, then you should consult a doctor.

 

2. DARK BROWNOR DARK RED COLOR

Most of the women have experienced dark brown or red-colored period blood. It may mean that the blood has been sitting in your uterus for a long time, and it is considered to be normal.

They are seen in the starting or at the end of periods. They are also seen in the middle of the Menstrual cycle. Usually, you can notice this dark brown color in the birth control method because when the hormones change the color of the period, blood changes.

 

3. JAM LIKE CLOT

Thick and jam-like clots are seen when the progesterone level is low, and your estrogen levels are high. It's a normal thing which you don't have to worry.

 

4. GREY REDDISH MIX

It may mean two things; one is, it can be a signal for a Sexually transmitted disease or infection (STD/STI), and the second one is, if you are pregnant, it may mean an early miscarriage.

If it turns out to be an infection, it is a sign that you are suffering from bacterial vaginosis. It is a common condition that can be treated.

 

5. CRANBERRY RED COLOR

If your period blood color is cranberry red-colored, then it is considered to be normal and healthy. It means your uterus is performing its function properly.

 

6. ORANGE COLOR

This color is an indication that your blood is mixed with fluid or means that you have an infection.

Bad odor and severe pains will accompany it if it's an STD/STI. In any case, if you have orange-colored period blood, it is best to consult a doctor.

 

7. WATERY COLOR

Super light pink or even without color Menstrual blood means that you are either nutrient deficient or you could potentially have ovarian cancer.

Studies have shown that if it has a whitish look and is consistently diluted, it could indicate severe anemia. It would help if you consider it when you experience a lighter period than normal and consult a doctor.
