The American Heart Association advises against consuming too much protein and saturated fats since they "digest slower in your stomach and take away oxygen and energy-delivering blood from your muscles."

"Maietta advises drinking water to stay hydrated throughout the day." "Dehydration can lead to fatigue and decreased performance."
To restore fluids lost during exercise, you should rehydrate both during and after your activity, advises the expert.
"If you've had an intense or prolonged workout, consider a sports drink with electrolytes to replenish sodium, potassium and other minerals," Maietta cautions, but "make sure to review the sugar content as some commercialized sports drinks are high in sugar."

Naturally, it's also ideal to stay away from large, heavy meals right before and after doing exercise, especially those that are high in fat and fiber.
Maietta says, "They can work against your goals and cause digestive discomfort."
