What Digital Dumpsites and Children Are

Electronic waste is referred to as "e-Waste." The majority of it consists of rejected production materials and electronic equipment that has been completely or partially abandoned as waste by the consumer or bulk consumer. In addition to more than 1000 precious metals, it also includes elements like biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, gold, copper, lead, mercury, cadmium, and chrome. 

 

The Global E-waste Statistic Partnership reports that the amount of electronic waste produced worldwide is rising quickly. In 2019, around 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste were produced. Only 17.4% of this e-waste, nevertheless, was recycled in unofficial facilities. The remainder was dumped in low- or middle-income nations for unauthorized processing by traffickers. The proliferation of computers and cellphones is to blame for this.

Indian e-waste production increased from 7 lakh tonnes in 2017–18 to over 10 lakh tonnes in 2019–20, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). In contrast, since 2017–18, the e-waste dismantling capacity has not been increased from 7.82 lakh tonnes. In 2018, the Ministry of Environment informed the tribunal that 95% of India's e-waste is recycled in the informal sector, and scrap dealers dispose of it unscientifically by burning it or dissolving it in acids.

Children who work in digital wastelands are more likely to have poor lung function, deoxyribonucleic acid damage, and a higher chance of developing chronic illnesses including cancer and heart disease. There are several women that work there, including expectant mothers. They are exposed to these poisons when processing e-waste, which might result in stillbirths and premature births. Families and communities living close to these e-waste dumpsites are also affected negatively by the dangers of operating at such locations.

The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is now in effect thanks to the government's implementation of the e-waste (management) Rules (2016). The producers should have been made to reach their "end of life" in accordance with the EPR principle. State governments are in charge of preserving the industrial area needed for e-waste recycling and dismantling operations. They must also put in place safeguards for the health and safety of personnel working in e-waste recycling and deconstruction facilities. In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, the nation's first e-waste clinic has been established to separate, process, and dispose of garbage from residential and business units.

In India, the majority of e-waste is recycled in unorganized facilities with a sizable workforce. By using crude methods, recovering metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) is a very risky activity.

To give better means to those who make their living, proper education, knowledge, and most crucially, alternative cost-effective technologies, must be supplied.

To solve India's e-waste management problems, a comprehensive strategy is required. One strategy might be for unorganized sector businesses to focus on collecting, dismantling, and segregation while organized business sectors handle metal extraction, recycling, and disposal.

In recent publications titled Children and Digital Dumpsites, the World Health Organization has underlined the risk that children working in informal processing face as a result of outmoded devices or e-waste.
